what would you suggest that we then call Football?

Trump said that we should come up with a new name for it and let soccer have the name "Football". I will say it is kind of confusing. Basket-ball makes sense. Base-ball makes sense. How much does the foot make contact with the football during a football game? Maybe 1.5% of the time?

What would you call it? (Is this the dumbest post of the year? Probably.)

I'll go first. The shape of a football is a "Prolate Spheroid". I like the word Gridiron (although even it doesn't completely apply anymore). It has kind of a rugged feel that is quite fitting. So maybe a game of Gridiron where we throw the old Spheroid around?

Oh boy….this thread is going to go great

I’ll throw my idea in anyways because I can avoid deranged comments.

Zoneball makes the most sense and agree it sounds so terrible. But if you were trying to come up with Baseball or Basketball in 2025 and threw out those ideas they would sound stupid too. A football being called a football is pretty limited otherwise.

Haha. Yes, this thread has so many opportunities to go awry. No matter what we call it it is going to sound awkward and weird at first. But it should catch on in 30 years or so.

I like Zoneball. The sport and the ball could be called a Zoneball (just like is done in other sports).

Considering that a football isn’t a sphere, the sport wouldn’t be called anything-ball. The ball is often called a “rock”, so I’m thinking “rocker”….

I am not willing to give up the term "football" to describe either the best sport on Earth nor the ball used for it...just because the rest of the world uses the term for Soccer. Its the same as the metric system vs Freedom Units. Nope.

American Exceptionalism for the win.

Of course the metric system logically makes more sense. So does calling soccer "football". Our game should logically be called "handbean" or the aforementioned "Downball" or "Zoneball".

That doesn't matter though. We are Americans. We call things what WE want to call them, and don't conform. That's the thing about being over here on the most prime real estate on Earth with the culture and technology that other nations envy. We are different by design. Sometimes making fun of it is hilarious though...

Having read through a lot of Ohio newspaper archives from the 1880s/1890s, they usually referred to it as "Gridiron Football", "Grids" or "Griddie."

Easily not even in the top 10 of the past 2 weeks.
Forum needs an awards program. At the end of the season folks could nominate and vote to determine the winner in :such categories as: Dumbest Post of the Year, Negavol oty, Sunshine Pumper oty, etc. This post right here might even qualify for nomination in some category.

Is DT pulling a Bud Light?

There is a name for that other sport. It is soccer.
