Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

Tim Banks gave up 31+ points to 7 of 8 sec teams this year. That's abysmal in year five. His lack of recruiting participation makes him even more expendable. His style is not compatible with the offense either. A bend but don't break scheme unnecessarily leaves the defense on the field longer by design and you see it with third down failures throughout his tenure. Need someone that is more aggressive and is a game time chess player.

That’s going to be tough to get. A lot of people don’t want to work with the offensive scheme, fair or unfair. His time should be up but it’s going to be an up-and-comer to replace most likely.

I think the bend but don’t break is a joint approach from Banks/Heupel due to their perception of our talent level.

You are the head in the sand fan aren't you? Banks makes elite DC money. He's robbing the university. You are probably one of the ones on here defending butch up to the point he was being escorted from the facilities.

This is year 5. Good defensive coordinators don't regress to year one statisticly. I haven't looked but I'd venture to guess most of the teams we played, patsies and all, scored significantly higher than their season averages when playing against us. The guys terrible. And if he hangs around, he will get Josh fired.
In the offseason I am a realist. During the season I am an unrepentant homer. WGWTFA
It was an average season, the only thing I think was bad and inexcusable was losing to Candy and that mouthy little midget.
As far as Butch is concerned, I always wanted him to succeed and it looked like for a minute he might. A couple big concern even when it looked like we might be aight. Watching the players warm up before games from the stands, every team (including the non-cons) had larger linemen.
Another thing that really bothered me about Butch was his cringy Chester the Molester way. He makes Beamer (non-goiter) and Dickwitz look cool.

Could be. At the end of the day, heupel is the head coach and is responsible for that scheme as well. But it's year five and the talent level excuse is self inflicted so its hard to justify it for the coaches to avoid the "y'all aren't good enough" assessment. Regardless, the defensive performance has been far below standard and changes need to be made. New eyes would be the best option imo.

I think Wilcox is a good coordinator but I'm not sure he's a fit here. I wouldn't be against it though. There are plenty of good D coordinators that would come here. Me and the guys were talking about Muschamp. Not sure how I feel about that one either.
Muschamp is now an analyst rather than Co-DC to focus on family. So not an option IMO

I don't think it should be. If Tim Banks didn't call soft zone 15 yards deep on a 3rd and 9 consistently, his boys are off the field. Not on it for another 3+ plays each time that happens. I mean hell, cut that number IN HALF and it's significant.

Would you pursue Wilcox? Might not be popular with his previous stint in his younger years but it would be a Saban move IMO. Grab a Head Coach to serve as a Coordinator or position coach while they transition out of a previous stop.
To go with that, bring in Stoops to be a defensive analyst/intern like Butch was at Bama.

No one is getting comparatively better, we are all paying more for basically the same. LSU promises 25, auburn claims 30, every other school will match or up it by a couple mill. And fans get Hopefully because they think it has to make them better.
Exactly, zero sum gain. No bigger pie, no better pie; people paying infinitely more for the same or a slightly degraded pie. Nothing approaching an acceptable ROI. When does everyone realize the emperor has no clothes?

Recruiting has been our main issue, imo…. We have way too many misses from our high school recruiting. I’m good with a new D-Coordinator as well This year was really bad but we did lose our top 3 defensive backs( going into the season) we really need to hit the portal hard to solidify our defense.

i am in full support of of whichever way josh goes. i see it both ways. however, I fully agree that recruiting hasnt been good enough. waay too many misses.

I don't know what the answer is. Just that, if it were me. And we go another porthole without signing what Id consider a championship caliber haul. i'm making changes.

Banks is horrible, hes gotta go. We had players that made plays this year. Ranked high in DTDs, turnovers, and TFLs i think. Overall scheme took players out of position and eliminated big stops or play abilities. His soft zone coverages and playing DBs 10-15 yards off the LOS on 3rd down killed us all year. He was out coached by every offense that had a pulse.
