With the way he's faded at Clemson, I don't think Bama would be interested in him anymore. GM or no GM.With the way Clemson has been barking at Dabo, I think the path is pretty clear for Dabo to leave Clemson as early as next year and head to Bama. They'll be some talks put in place that to change his portal philosophy. They'll probably have the GM handle all that so he doesn't have to put up with it.

But it isn't just one season. This latest season is the worst in the trend, but his program has been in steady decline (from admittedly a very high level) for about 5 years now. He made the CFP last year, but didn't this year and would not have made a 12-team playoff in 2023 or 2021 either, and that's with a far easier path to the playoff than SEC and Big Ten schools. Even in 2022 he would have made the playoff, but got smoked by us with a backup QB in the Orange Bowl. It's 1 season. He was just in the playoffs a year ago.
And who else is Bama realistically going to get that is any better? The only for sure better coaches are Smart and Day. Maybe you could argue Lanning, but he's yet to win anything of note. Maybe Freeman as well, but again, he hasn't won anything.
And before you say Kiffin, he is not a better coach and they already had their shot at him and he didn't even get a phone call. I really don't think they want a reunion.
Lashlee is not a better option than Dabo my guy.But it isn't just one season. If I'm Alabama and have to replace DeBoer, the easy first call is Lanning, although he may or may not have already turned them down once. This is kind of hot takey, but I don't think Rhett Lashlee would be a bad hire for them. He's done really well at SMU after entering the ACC, and has coached in the SEC some (including at Auburn). I think he'd make more sense than Tommy Rees or Glenn Schumann, who were 1/2 in the odds to replace DeBoer that came out after they lost to FSU.

I could see Lanning as he is still ascending where as Dabo has plateaued. Of course the main reason Dabo has plateaued is his archaic views on the portal and NIL. If he isn't willing to change in that regard, than for sure he won't be the HC at Bama.
Dabo has of course achieved infinitely more than Lashlee. You yourself hit on the reason it is highly debatable that he's a better option though, which is the trajectory. Hindsight is 2020, but who was a better coaching candidate in 2004...Urban Meyer or Phil Fulmer?Lashlee is not a better option than Dabo my guy.

He took 4 last year, with 2 of them being highly ranked. So maybe he is adapting.Dabo has of course achieved infinitely more than Lashlee. We're 5 years into the Portal era now and Dabo has taken like 1 or 2 transfers. He isn't changing his stance on it.
Dabo HAS to embrace the portal or college football will pass him by.It's 1 season. He was just in the playoffs a year ago.

He can stay relic in the ACC. No excuse in any way you cut it for Clemson not to be winning the ACC at the very least 3 out of 5 years. Don't know what is in their QB stable, but his weird attachment to Klubnik has been his short coming the last 2-3 years. Never saw his 5* ranking come through.Dabo HAS to embrace the portal or college football will pass him by.
General Neyland was a better coach but he didn't like the forward pass. Neyland, unless he adjusted from the single wing, would get crushed in today's football.
Dabo is quickly becoming a relic because he's not changing with the game and not adapting quickly enough.
With Franklin going to VT, Dabo is only going to fall further unless he adapts. I think Franklin might raid Clemson a time or two (read: tamper) because there's no danger of Dabo hitting back.He can stay relic in the ACC. I know it's VT, but the ACC is wide open for someone to dominate, and no one is. REcruiting to VT may not help Franklin be a national power, but he's certainly set up nice to be the top dog or two in the ACC instead of #4 dog in the B10. And he won't get the shaft at VT ever like PSU just rammed up him. That whole saga and losing 11 recruits to VT is not over. Unless they have a splash hire waiting on the season to end, that AD will be handed papers within two weeks of the next coach's hiring. That raid alone will afford Franklin a shot at challenging the conference in year 1. Though it's not a tall order to do so. Nobody actually wins the ACC. The winner typically backs into it.With Franklin going to VT, Dabo is only going to fall further unless he adapts. Can he? He went 7-5 with one of the better returning QBs in the country and a defense that was supposed to be good.He can stay relic in the ACC. Penn State was arrogant and they're screwed from the top down. As you say, who fires a coach at a major school without having a plan? It's insane. It's a leadership problem from the Ivory Tower level down.I know it's VT, but the ACC is wide open for someone to dominate, and no one is. What possible reason could you have not to have a decent or better hire in place before signing day and lose all those commits. And if you do have a formidable replacement under wraps till the right time, you just torpedoed his first 2-3 years losing all these commits.
