We could look way further into it but I just find it interesting how LSU fired their coach mid season, felt like the program was in shambles, made major moves throughout their athletic department, the governor of LA was involved, and on and on and on, finished it all up with the most talked about coaching hire this year in CFB....AND...they were only 1 loss worse than us in both overall record and in conference.

They also played Vandy closer than we did (they lost by 7 ON THE ROAD, we lost by 21 at HOME) and Oklahoma (they lost by 4 ON THE ROAD with an interim head coach, we lost by 6 at HOME with Heupel). They played Alabama 6 points closer as well.

I've never had a problem with Heupel but it kind of makes you question who was worse off this year....AND think maybe it's time for Heupel to get it done next year with at least a decent run in the CFP. I will never EXPECT a NC....but I do think it's time for at least another CFP birth and a win or two in the CFP with all the resources and support this staff has been given for so many years.

Literally happened less than a year ago.

LSU shoved all the chips to the middle of the table this season. They spend big money in the portal, had a $4mil QB & forgot they needed a OL. LSU is still living in the dream they should win a NC every 4 years completely forgetting the 2007 Les Miles NC may be the biggest fluke in CFB history. Kelly was never liked by the fan base other than 1 2pt play call vs Bama

Even before Nico left everyone at Tennessee knew we were facing a rebuild year. The jr & sr classes were recruited under major NCAA pressure. Heupel & staff chose to weather it with the younger players. The administration understands where this program was at, what limits CJH had in his first 3 years recruiting. Heupel is here a few more seasons before we get to go hire another G5 coach.

LSU has won 3 National Championships since 2003. Tennessee hasn't won one in 27 years. Kelly took over a program loaded with talent and did nothing. Heupel took over a dumpster fire after a decade of misery and is building it. Kelly made 0 CFP appearances. Heupel has made 1 with a worse starting point.

We did not have the depth of the teams y'all are trying to compare us to. We haven't had a 5 star sitting on the bench to plug and play after the other 5 star gets drafted.

I won't repeat what others have said here but I will add on LSU was ranked in the top 10 starting the preseason.

It's also weird you're using examples of AFTER they fired Kelly to prove your alluded point that we should fire Heupel and raise our standards. You might reply "that's not what I said" but by the comparisons you are making it is clear what your intent is with this post. However to use games after him being fired as a comparison for the standard of coach is in bad faith.

I'm going to rate this post a D-.

The previous 40 years before Nick Saban arrived at LSU, they had three 10 wins seasons total. I remember not sweating when they popped up on UT's schedule. He really turned that program around the five years he was there and they have been able to sustain the talent level.

The reason LSU felt like the program was in shambles is because they were a preseason National title contender by the media and their fan base. Finishing 7-5 was DEVASTATING to them due to the expectations. This was always a bridge year for UT after the QB debacle so most had us going 8-4 or 9-3 which is what happened.

Clarity! Some many opinions on this board, most are reactive and responsive to some immediate stimulus. Nice to see this post

We have to stop remembering where this program “was” and comparing every day of our lives to those **** years. To call year 5 a “rebuild” is just baffling and nothing more than a cope.

I agree that Heup is here for a few more years, but this year was blatant regression. No way around it. I also think downplaying LSU and the hire is silly. I could be wrong, but if I had to bet on LSU either making the playoffs or not making them in year 1 with Kiffin I’d put my money on “making”. They have the talent and the resources and they’ve shown they’re serious about it.

I was at the game in Baton Rouge in 2022. We were his 5th or 6th game and their fans sitting around us were really griping about him then.
Once he was shown dancing with the high school recruits like he was grinding on some chick at the club, it was over. Or maybe he was the chick. Hell, I don’t know. I just know he was never a good fit there.

They hated Brian Kelly from the moment he faked an accent in his introductory press conference. IMHO.

“This is a great day for me and my FAYEMUHLEE”

So unbelievably cringe and insulting. The most biased people in America are from the upper Midwest and Northeast when their thoughts of the South actually come to the surface

All good observations. I think it’s reasonable for us to EXPECT to be in the CFP hunt every year, and to make the field no less than 3 out of every 5 years, with a legitimate shot to win it all at least once every 5 years. Resources are not an issue.

You can ignore the fact that Tennessee was under NCAA investigation & opposing coaches, several with nc rings on their fingers, told recruits “Tennessee won’t be post season eligible while you’re there” for his first 2 full classes if you want to. Fortunately those in control & those with the money for the program to succeed don’t.

I think the biggest reason was the preseason hype of national title contender and heisman winner that did it. If he can’t win with that roster then he can’t win there.

Another comparison is the way both LSU and Tenn react to losing to Vandy. Face it, losing to Vandy is why Kelly got fired...it was the final straw. And losing to Vandy got the fans talking about CJH being replaced as well. Vandy needs to stop winning games because there's only so many Lane Kiffins to go around

New era of transfer portal and NIL makes 98% of this cope. Down 2 schollies is the only “cope” we have left to cling to left of that mess. 0 of that had anything to do with 0 good wins and a real bad loss to Vandy this year. Clear regression.

Apples and oranges are also similar in many ways but also, you know, COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.
