I’m not sure but I thought I heard once that those limits was because Bear Bryant would sign massive classes and the limit was put in place for competitive fairness. The VQ guys have mentioned multiple times that there seem to be a couple of SEC schools holding up the transition to the higher scholarship number.
I wonder if there might be an advantage in sticking with the lower number because it allows you to dedicate more resources to each player. If Big 10, Big 12, and ACC schools are going with 105 scholarships (or whatever the number is) and spreading their rev share and NIL among that number of kids, the SEC would be able to pay each individual player more. Is there an advantage for the SEC in that?
Recruiting and retention and filling in the cracks through the portal is the way. Georgia,Texas, Bama still focus on recruiting and retention mainly and add portal players to make up the difference. You can’t just be a portal exclusive team. That is insane and it isn’t happening at the winning programs. Not all portal players are great and an improvement. You’re not going to win often or consistent with an all portal team. You still build teams through recruiting, development and retaining as many as you can. Facts! GBOI ask again.
“What benefit is singing the Top 100 players in HS if all of them want 500k?
There’s no advantage. It still comes down to money.
