Joey Halzle linked to Florida offensive coordinator job

The coaching carousel went into a full-blown spin cycle on Sunday with five SEC schools announcing new head coaches. One of those final answers was Tulane’s Jon Sumrall heading to Florida after the Gators missed out on Lane Kiffin.

The next step for all of these programs will be filling out a full staff, which obviously could impact Tennessee. Alex Golesh, now at Auburn, has plenty of obvious ties to this staff. Defensive line coach Rodney Garner is an Auburn alum and is currently on an expiring contract, for example.

Another name popped up on Monday morning though, one that would be a pretty big surprise. Pete Nakos named Tennessee offensive coordinator Joey Halzle as a name to know in Sumrall’s search.

Early names to know as Sumrall evaluates the offensive coordinator market are Pitt’s Kade Bell, Georgia Tech’s Buster Faulkner and Tennessee’s Joey Halzle. The Yellow Jackets rank No. 12 in team offense, and Faulkner has developed quarterback Haynes King. (Pete Nakos, On3 Sports)

Rightfully so. His ability to scheme players open, take advantage of mismatches, and reproduce great offense with 4 different QBs in 5 years might be the most impressive thing in NCAA offenses. We are on pace to have over 500 points scored this season. Second only to Hooker's second year.

It would be our luck that Florida brings him in as OC and he absolutely kills it. Not saying that he would, but we really don’t know how good or bad that he is since Heupel handles playcalling.

The biggest concern I have is the lack of focus on the details on offense they had at times during the season. It took a complete fiasco at Alabama to fix the penalty situations. Missed assignments still occurred too often. Huge plays were lost all thru the season cause of basic fundamental mistakes.

He was fired by the Raiders. He’s currently unemployed and it’s doubtful that he’ll get another opportunity in the NFL.

If he leaves it should be Heuple's opportunity to hire a play caller he trusts so he can be a HC only. He did it with Golesh but not since he left. Kiffin even commented that once he gave up the play calling at Ole Miss a couple of yrs ago he became a better HC. Lets just hope some logic will creep into his head.

Yes, as long as the talent outmatches the talent on the defense. We have yet to see this offense succeed against an elite defense. Bama '22 perhaps is the closest. Even if we count Bama 22 that's proven to be more of an anomaly. And I would count UGA this year but obviously their defense struggled all year to some degree. In the games with good defenses...

It's funny how when we do well, then the opponent doesn't have an elite defense.

What other elite defenses has this offense scored 40 against? Check that just 30? I want to see it succeed but Heup buries weak opponents with 50-70 point games to prop up the numbers. In games against teams with winning records, which means they at least have decent defenses, we averaged 28 ppg.
