Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

I mean, you just described Chaney.
There are several guys on staff who could serve the role Joey does and the material results are going to be basically the same. It's almost always the players that make the difference in a system like this which is constantly evolving. Never thought I'd see so many narrow splits with a Heupel offense as we saw this year.

We got problems if Golesh ends up with a better staff than Heup. If we are stuck with the same staff or somebody ends up getting promoted then Heup is in trouble. I just hope if Banks gets fired that he does not go out and get a DC from Albany community college. He has to fix this and find a S/C while he is at it.

Whether or not Golesh has a better staff will be a matter of opinion.

Only way to measure is Ws and Ls.

Sitake to PSU wouldn’t be surprising. Several of us called it yesterday when the PSU insiders started pushing his name. He’s a very good coach. PSU fans won’t be happy though because he’s not a “big name”.

Re: Halzle to Florida. I think most of us would be fine with him leaving.
In fact, some of them would eventually make him the new Golesh.

“It was always Halzle that made the offense work!”

I have also always enjoyed the hypocrisy of little Nicky... who hates the lack of loyalty in player portals and money coming into the game for players. Yet, he advised Lane to jump ship from a playoff team just before the playoffs.

Don’t know which is my favorite, this quote or the grass isn’t always greener one.

Heupel is a very good coach and deserves multiple average years before we consider making a change. But I’d like to point out, that’s not the origin of the Penn State stuff. Someone wants us to believe he’s a candidate there and interested. Probably doesn’t mean anything more than he wants a raise or some other leverage point behind the scenes.

He needs to hire someone outside of his orbit to help add offensive variation. I think he did so at UCF, so no reason to think he’s against it now.

Ultimately my biggest concern at this point is if you lose Banks and Garner, you’re losing much of your recruiting edge. I’m not arguing Banks is a good coordinator, for the record, just saying you’re losing two known commodities in the talent acquisition space.
Eh I’m not sure how much of a recruiting force Timmy is. RG on the other hand is quite the asset. Unfortunately if there’s a change there it seems like it will be something out of our control with family health stuff going on.

I get what you’re saying, but just the overall play, inconsistency on offense, terrible defense most of the time tells me 8-4 is where we should be, and be thankful we’re not 7-5 because that MS st or Ark game could of went either way just like the UGA and OU games could.
This team very easily could have been 11-1 or undefeated. Just as easily as they could have been 6-6.

Don’t know what there is to take from that but it’s pretty wild to me.

And Joey was coming in with hype this year being a “mobile qb” i didn’t see that at all.
I saw it. He’s not a natural scrambler but he got it done on occasion when called upon or needed. We just didn’t see it too much probably because the coaches knew we couldn’t afford to play loose with his health.

From the actual article:

Heupel’s name has been linked to the Penn State coaching vacancy in several reports. The Vols finished the regular season with a disappointing 45-24 home loss to Vanderbilt last Saturday. Heupel understands the restlessness among fans, but said nobody’s expectations are higher than his or anybody else’s within the program.

“I wouldn’t want low expectations. That’s part of why I want to be here,” Heupel told On3. “We’ll win big.”

“… It’s my job to evaluate everything inside our program. I told our players we’ve had some disappointing results, but this second half was extremely disappointing, coaches and players, and not just one.”

As far as any personnel changes coming within the program, Heupel said, “I’ll certainly take a hard look at all of it.”

Next year:

QB: Gmac/Faizon
RB: Bishop/Morris
WR1: Matthews/Smith
WR2: Stayley/Jefferson/Dodson
WE3: RaRa/Keys
TE: Davis/Brahme/JVD
OL: Heard, Moe, P, Perry, Sanders

Leo: Ross/Portal stud
DT: Campbell/Portal stud
DT: Thomas(juco guy)/Utley
SDE: Dye/Portal stud

LB: Carter/Perlotte Spillman/Harmon
CB1: Gibson/portal
CB2: Redmond/portal
Star: Portal stud/Portal
Safety: Farooq/portal
Safety: portal stud/Walton

IMO this is a damn roster. Spend on the defense and go win.
Caleb herring will split time with Ross. Don’t see us taking a portal guy there. Jmo

You left Hobbs off there.

I could see us running more 3 linebacker sets next year.

I wonder if a young guy has the stuff to step up into the starting position. Walton? Poteat? I’d be concerned about them being depended on but it would be par for the course with CJH rewarding guys who have tenure.
