Ok-a thought popped into my head and I don't know the answer to this one.

Was looking through Lanes contract with LSU term sheet. His contract contains a clause that if he wins a NC at LSU-they make him the highest paid coach in the country. Immediately. As of the next day.

I know Saban had that same deal with being the highest paid coach and for the purposes of this post-I am going to say Kirby now does. I really don't know his contract particulars but I would wager he has some form of clause to that effect

So say everything falls Lanes way next year and LSU wins it all. He is immediately moved to $1 more than Kirby's salary.

Kirby's salary is then immediately increased to $1 more than Lanes. And we keep going to infinity.

While I deal with contracts each day-they are business contracts. How does this work with individuals?

I am assuming there is an "up to" provision?

Or they just agree to raise it to that amount?

Basically when you have two coaches with both of their contracts legally requiring that they are the highest paid CFB in the land-how? By logic only one person can ultimately be the "king"

I think it would just be based on whatever date the contract was signed. Like 2025 Kirby makes 12 million and 2026 kiffin wins it all Kiffin gets 12 million plus one.

OR

its based on the date of the NC or whenever the contract extension/bonus is due to be paid.

Unless the contract was written by an UGA grad, I would think that the language says that he must be raised above the highest salary existing on the day he wins the championship. Meaning a raise for someone else the next day would not be considered.

I haven't read Lane's contract, but I bet that provision means that if he wins a NC he becomes the highest paid head coach as of that particular moment. It's a one-time reset each time he wins a title. LSU better have written the language airtight around that, lol.

Kirby's contract has language in there where it's a perpetual thing. If some coach signs a deal that pays them more than him, he gets an automatic raise.

Kirby is obviously an incredible coach, but I was kind of surprised to see that in there even though of course UGA would do anything to retain him. What job is Kirby going to leave for, including the NFL?

Maybe their agents can work it out.

Jimmy Sexton can call up Jimmy Sexton to work out the contract details.

@DeerPark12 might have some insight on the "automatic raises to infinity" question since I believe he does sports contract work.

I actually wrote a "highest paid in the field..." escalator in a contract a couple of years ago and it basically sets a term. So as of the date of signing, he becomes the highest paid coach in the country. If that triggers an automatic raise for someone else, then their contract becomes the largest until the next term begins. So for a coach, its whatever the effective date is (aka the majoc date each year where the buyout goes down).

So if Lane wins a title and gets a raise to $12 million, then Kirby gets an automatic raise to $12,000,001, Lane wouldn't get a raise to $12,000,002 until the next term begins. It's all semantics to tell recruits, anyway. Even Jimmy isn't getting in the weeds over a few bucks. He has different things in different deals that can allow several of them to claim the "highest paid" title regardless.

If I read things correctly, the agreement calls for them to make him the highest paid coach. Says nothing about keeping him the highest paid coach.
