Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

You gonna have the patience for that if it costs some games early in their career? Or complain we should’ve gotten a portal QB?
Yes, I have been through worse with the vols, I can survive a young qb growing in this league. And I'm not referring to starting Gmac as a true freshman, I think Joey starting was the right call, I'm talking next year.
And people are not asking for the whole starting lineup to be freshmen and sophomores. But when you have much more athletic players at lb than what you have starting, you need to at least work them in to becoming full time starters by mid season. Redmond looked terrible early season, but by the end of the season he had greatly improved. I think everyone understands there will be growing pains with young guys, but better than what I watched Saturday with older players.

Heupel is a very good coach and deserves multiple average years before we consider making a change. But I’d like to point out, that’s not the origin of the Penn State stuff. Someone wants us to believe he’s a candidate there and interested. Probably doesn’t mean anything more than he wants a raise or some other leverage point behind the scenes.

He needs to hire someone outside of his orbit to help add offensive variation. I think he did so at UCF, so no reason to think he’s against it now.

Ultimately my biggest concern at this point is if you lose Banks and Garner, you’re losing much of your recruiting edge. I’m not arguing Banks is a good coordinator, for the record, just saying you’re losing two known commodities in the talent acquisition space.

I hate watched almost every Nico game this year, he was absolutely 100% the problem last year. Winning 10 games with him at the helm and winning at OU and vs Bama is probably the best coaching job Heupel has done for us in his time here.

Nico is a better runner than Joey though. But it's not like Nico put on a clinic for UCLA. He was a "miss" though...just disappointed it took over 2 years for the staff to accept that.

So you’re confidently saying they had no issues on the OL and WR? If you plug our OL and our WR in at UCLA you don’t see him winning more games with them?..UCLA was depleted can’t entirely put that on Nico…he knew he was leaving a better situation and going straight into a dumpster fire. I truly believe it was because of Haz and he felt like staying in this system would kill his draft stock more than the ladder would with how it all unfolded..his PR team should be fired no doubt.

Our WRs are very good.

I’d rather under throw bc you can get DPI and it gives your WR a chance to make a play.

Nico definitely better with legs. Joey’s biggest limitation.

And Joey was coming in with hype this year being a “mobile qb” i didn’t see that at all.

I mean how do you get battle-tested and experienced older players if not playing the unproven young guys?

The irony is this team was over half full of unproven freshmen and sophomores and people complained about how lost we looked out there at times...

Joey had a great season though and I'm very much a believer that we got a bit lucky in that. I thought he'd have a better year than Nico, but I didn't see 67% for 3444 yards with 24 TDs and 10 INTs based on his previous seasons at App State.
Thats not what I'm addressing.

We play unproven guys all the time. Redmond for example. Perlotte earned his spot on the field the second half of the season.

Those guys earn it in practice.

What annoys me is the "this guy who hasn't played a meaningful down is significantly better than the starter who's been here for 3 years" argument.

Or seeing Perlotte play well and complain that he wasn't playing sooner. He wasn't playing sooner because he clearly still had the Xs and Os to figure out.

The talent of the young guys isn't the problem, its how long it takes them to 1. Learn the game/scheme and/or 2. Have a body that's physically ready to handle this level.

Cool but you ignored the bold part of my comments that have been said on here
Lol. Quite the leap my man.

I've said for 3 years Banks would get him fired. I've taken heat for it, which is fine. I still believe that. Josh has the ability to change the narrative of him reaching his ceiling. We will see if he does it.

Also, what we say/advocate for here has nothing to do whether he stays or goes-leaves of his own will or fired. Josh and Josh alone holds those cards.

To be fair, we also witnessed a few things that made me think this was a 10-2 season too.

Max hits a normally routine FG and we beat Georgia....if the OL shows up for the OU game we don't hand them 3 scores off stupid turnovers and we win that game.

Defense has to improve, not just because of this season though. Banks' put the same **** on the field for 5 years and only 1 of those did we have the horses for it to be successful and Ohio State made that look like the fluke year.
I get what you’re saying, but just the overall play, inconsistency on offense, terrible defense most of the time tells me 8-4 is where we should be, and be thankful we’re not 7-5 because that MS st or Ark game could of went either way just like the UGA and OU games could.

We don’t have those funds unless you cut George and some others loose. We are not an endless supply of funds. We spend well but we can’t afford $3 million Joey, $1-2 million Faizon, and $500-1million for George. Even if George left, you would have to spend likely a decent amount. I would rather ride with $3 million total on QB without Joey and an extra $2 million to spend on defense. Otherwise, we will look the same next year as this year.
Joey gets closer to $1.2, I believe

Hes

He's not wrong.
Yeah but he's is though. Its backup QB syndrome.

Smyrna isn't there in practice every day but the coaches are. When a player is ready to play, he will play.

Smyrna was screaming Boo should be starting and playing every snap half the season then shut up quick when it was obvious WHY Boo wasn't starting and why he was earning less snaps.

He always wants the backup to play more because he clearly knows more than the coaches lmao

Banks is one of , if not our worst recruiter. I'm not even sure he recruits.

In all fairness boo is good!…but boo and his momma boo are the problem.hes a freak of an athlete definitely would have contributed here.

Anyone looked at our schedule next season?

If we have the same staff in place and don't go pillage the portal for defense player$$$, we're gonna get cooked. Definitely need a Sam Leavitt type portal QB as well... a Freshman/ RS freshman isn't going to get it done if we can't get Joey for another year.

They also said the defense is one of the best they had seen in a long time and a strength of the team.
I read everything they write, and I do not remember a single time they called the defense the best they had seen in a long time. And everything they do say in reality, they always give the caveat "we don't get to see much, so take it for what it's worth."

You guys just straight up make things up when it comes to Volquest because you're mad about something.

6-6 or 7-5 most likely. 8-4 would be overachieving with this staff.
