2022 was a fun season, but ever since then it just hasn’t felt the same. The biggest issue, in my opinion, is that defenses have caught up to this style of football. The scouting is better, the adjustments are better, and we aren’t doing enough to stay ahead of it.

The Georgia game was the one time this year we looked like we had some real juice. Georgia struggled early because we finally rolled out new stuff they hadn’t seen on tape. They didn’t have enough film to game-plan for it, which is why it worked… for a while. But that also proves the point: when we add wrinkles, we can compete. When we don’t, our offense becomes predictable fast.

Aguilar was definitely an upgrade compared to what we’ve had the past few seasons, but the system around him is still too easy to diagnose. You can only go so far when defenses basically know what’s coming.

And then there’s the discipline. Penalties, mental mistakes, sloppy execution...it’s frustrating to watch. You can’t talk about having “championship-caliber defense” and then fall right back into mediocrity. The inconsistency is the most disappointing part.

Overall, it just feels like we haven’t evolved since 2022, and whatever spark we had that year has completely disappeared instead of becoming a brand of football we can be proud of.

OP, we are California of the mid-2000’s.

We were one of the highest scoring teams in the country. You don’t know what you’re talking about
But in the 4 games we lost we had 8 turnovers and averaged 26 PPG. I’m not saying our offense wasn’t good, but aside from UGa first quarter, we were veryyyyyy streaky. And when you play fast and don’t score and the defense is straight buns, you’re going to lose against elite competition.

I still think we can do more formation wise and adjustment wise to stay ahead of defenses.

He needs a good running qb to operate. Joey has been solid this year but he’s not good enough at scrambling. Oklahoma showed that if you just blitz him constantly eventually it wears him down. Lea studied the film and came up with a great gameplan. Gotta give credit where it’s due.

IMO we haven't had a good QB since Hooker left. Heupel overestimated Iamaleava as did about 50 other coaches including Saban. And Milton was mediocre at best. We were lucky to get Aguilar considering the time constraints Nico imposed upon us and he's been a little better but he's still middle of the pack caliber.

We need more than a good QB but that's the most pressing thing for next year.

“You’re going to lose against elite competition”….yes?

Every loses to elite competition.

I get that but what was our best win this season….we beat no ranked teams this year. And committed 2 turnovers per game in our losses. If we want to be elite, that has to change. Otherwise we can keep going 8-4 and be 🆒 with that 🤷🏾‍♂️

And I’m not saying we’re going to win every game. But even UGA we gave an amazing effort. If our losses were like that…I wouldn’t be mad. But just getting embarrassed ain’t it imo

They lined up on the line and brought the heat.. why couldn’t our coaches adjust we’ve seen this rodeo before like you said why wasn’t there an answer?

Middle screens would’ve softened that blitz up. Rolling Joey out would’ve taken advantage of it as well. Nah…we’ll just run up the middle and have Joey stand in the pocket all day.

Our offense has been near the top of college football all year. So no his offense hasn’t been figured out.

Isn’t 3 the most ranked wins anyone in the country has?

Sadly, I think Heupel didn't trust Joey throwing on a roll out nor throwing the middle screen. Heupel hates turnovers and Joey has a history (including this year) of throwing some iffy balls into traffic.

I've not seen all of our film but I'll bet Lea saw that Joey A wouldn't dump the middle screen or roll often so blitzing was pretty safe. We certainly didn't publish them for it.
