Dickey had absolutely nothing to do with T-B. Construction was started in early 83 right after the Worlds Fair. Dickey was named AD in 1 985,

As I recall Dr Boling was asked if he preferred the East Site(downtown) or the west(on campus.). He replied, "i dont give a damn where it is as long as it is south of Lexington, Ky.! :)
Yep remember drinking beer in the TB rafters before there was a roof.

Correct, I got Ellis and Johnson mixed up. Both were from Georgia and as mentioned Johnson played on mears last team, while Ellis played on DeVoes 2nd team as a freshman.
Don't sell DeVoe too short. He had some very good recruits and teams after Johnson. Does the name Dale Ellis ring a bell?
Tony White and Howard Wood were pretty damn good.

Speaking of, what historic structure was located in the footprint of Food City Arena?

The Worlds highest Ferris Wheel during the Worlds Fair! Rode in many tines in 82.

Not quite the footprint, but close.

Cool perspective of the undergraduate library just before it was rebuilt.

DeVoe was the absolute worst period of watching basketball for me. Got so tired of watching games with scores of less than 20 or 25 points. Had to pass the ball 20 times before anyone took a shot.
DeVoe took his first 5 teams to the Tourney. Then he went 5 years without going until his last year when the Vols were blown out by an average West Virginia team 84-68. He was fired shortly after that.

DeVoe was the non-alcoholic basketball version of Bowden Wyatt. Arrogant and completely out of touch with the changing world of basketball. "I'm not changing my system for anybodY."

DeVoe hung his hat on suffocating defense. Think game started to change and he couldn’t adapt

It was a double whammy for Devoe. On offense he wanted to pound the paint (and hated the 3).

Then he’d like to start running clock with any lead and around 4 or 5 minutes left and force opponents to foul.

Then the triple… he was a strict disciplinarian when players started to not want to be coached by drill instructors. Kevin Nash and Dwayne Schintzius didn’t mesh well with CDD’s philosophy.

He was also a hard core man-to-man defensive coach… but that philosophy fit well with the NBA. Ellis even said that he was coming back for his senior season to work on his defense.

Then he’d like weirdest Devoe take was tgat ge didn’t want dunk and promoted raising goals to 12 feet.

pretty funny and very complimentary of us. Showed a great pic of he and Pat together.

Looking at that pic makes one think that we have just been fooked in basketball over the years . What other program has had 3 of their 4 greatest coaches having to retire/leave while still in their prime.

Ray Mears had the program primed to become a Top 10 contender when he had to take medical leave because of depression. The second year after he left 78-79(interim coach in 77-78) the Vols won the first SEC tourney and their first game in the NCAA Tourney. What if Mears was still coach and got Jimmy Braddock from Chattanooga(UNC) and Derrick Hord from Bristol(UK) in that recruiting class. To his credit DeVoe did get Reggie Johnson from Ga. But after Johnson and Mears recruits left our program went into a period of mediocrity for most of 2 decades until Pearl came along.

And we all know the Pearl disaster, undone by lying about a stupid Bar BQ in his own back yard. So he goes to Auburn and takes them to a FF. He would have probably taken us to several FFs if he had stayed.

And then of course there is Pat who is one of the 2 greatest women coaches of alltime who had to step down with early onset dementia. Even though competition had gotten tougher in womens BB I would imagine she still had 2 or 3 NCs left in her career.

Fortunately with our other greatest coach it looks like RB will be able to retire on his own terms for the first time in UT BB history.

Could this be the year we finally break the FF jinx?
Not important to the context of your post, but Pearl took Auburn to the FF twice.

UT wasn’t gonna get Derrick Hord. Mr. Gatton bought him for UK With a summer job…he only had to pick up a check on Fridays.

It was Parking Lot C-7, a commuter student parking lot.

I didn’t know Schintzus played for us. I remember him at Florida. But I didn’t starting following basketball until Devoes last year, oddly

Yeah, Schintzius was out of control, a 13-year-old mind in a 7'2" body, and DeVoe's demand for him to cut off his mullet was probably a bridge too far given the laundry list of actually important things Schintzius needed to do to become a more functional member of the team and society in general. Going to coach at the Naval Academy was brilliant coaching change decision since he got to coach well-disciplined students, and nobody had mullets. I was up there on the Annapolis campus in July of 1993 for some sort of one-week or two-week summer camp after my junior year of high school. I was on their schedule during it, but after the camp ended, I prowled around and found DeVoe's office and he was actually in there. Man, he was such an unforgettably supernice individual.

Yes. Devoe is a classy rep of UT BB. Wade as well. Not so much KO or Jerry Green. Cuonzo could have had he not been blaming everybody else for his difficulties. Buzz was just Buzz. Donnie and Bruce aren’t coaches that I’d want my kid playing for.

Barnes, Devoe, and Houston are the elderly statesmen of UT BB. Too bad Wade couldn’t have had some on court success, but he’s a really good human being.
