Syracuse takes down Utah, their first P4 opponent of the season.
Although they struggled to score in the first half, excellent defense kept the game close and they came out explosive in Q3. They took control and took the lead and Utah just seemed to have no answers. The stats were fairly even throughout. Syracuse had more FT shots but scored at a lesser %. It was the rebounding for Syracuse and having better 3PT shooting (32% to Utah's 23%) that won them the game. They outscored Utah in the 2nd half 40-24.
Phelia lead team in the 1st half in scoring and basically kept them in it when everyone else struggled offensively (and she played all 40 minutes). However it was Dominique Darius that lead the team with 16 points, 10 rebounds, 100% FT shooting, 40% FG shooting, and only 2 fouls. She is a major get for this team.
I will say that I had low expectations going into this season (I've stated here) and fans I talked to at the start of the season were worried, based off the disaster that was last year. However, I feel like the Orange are much improved this year. Far from the exhibition game, they actually play like a cohesive unit. There is still the issue of uneven scoring, but if they can continue to rebound well and play solid defense, I think they'll fare better than much year. They're now 4-0 in the season, and granted, they haven't yet played a true upper echelon team. But it looks miles better than last year.
The real test will be on Sunday against #6 Michigan. There's a few ways that game could do, depending on the outcome of Michigan's game v UConn tonight. I wouldn't be shocked if the Orange played Michigan close for at least a half.
Big difference IMO was rebounding, allowing Syracuse to take a lot more shots. Otherwise as you pointed out, stats were pretty even.Syracuse takes down Utah, their first P4 opponent of the season.

Is Michigan really that much better than USC? Or is this one of those games you look at as being a sloppy mess and the home team was helped by the crowd?
All those times they got their pocket picked at the top of the key or one played dribbled straight into four defenders and launched up a shot ... oof. The final play was pretty indicative of how they played all game. Not necessarily a bad loss for USC but it didn’t look like a good one either. Poorly managed game and poor coaching.
