Wow, I had no clue there were 18 teams playing at 2 venues.

Does anyone know how they determine the 3rd game matchups? From what I could find it looks like only 2 games on Wednesday (1st place and 3rd place games). It appears the other 14 teams play on Thursday. I'm assuming they would avoid matching UT against Bama, Auburn, or Syracuse on Thursday if that is where we land.

From what I’ve gathered your 3rd game is based on record and point differential from first 2 games…essentially after first 2 games everyone will be seeded based on record and then point differential and matchups will be based off those seedings.

It's also capped at +/- 20 points. From the NCAA website:

  1. Head-to-head record
  2. Total point differential of both games played in the group, with a cap of plus or minus 20 points per game
  3. Total points scored
  4. Total points allowed

I do not believe there's much of a chance for Tennessee or Houston to play in the title game as a result, especially given that they're more defensively focused and you reach the points scored criteria first.

Are they adding 2/3/4 together? Or are those tie breaker orders? If tie breaker orders then I doubt 3 & 4 matter much.

Definitely tie breaker orders. I agree they won’t matter much, the level of competition is strong enough that even the teams with the easiest matchups (Kansas playing KenPom 55 and 74?) are likely to win both games by 20.

So it’s like my daughter’s softball tournaments! Glad we get the number 1 team in the country for a pool game.

Both of our games are at the MGM Grand for the first two day. Along with these teams:
Rutgers
Kansas
Notre Dame
Houston
Syracuse
Alabama
Gonzaga
Maryland
UNLV

Why is that important? If you were to be one of the final four ... you are guaranteed to be playing for the THIRD day in the same venue.

Here is my version of "chalk" influenced by KenPom and strength of schedule bias added ... after the second games, here are what I expect to be the as yet unlisted games ...
The results of win/lost records with highest tiebreakers listed first ...
I am certainly optimistic that we can beat Houston. With that thought in mind, I sincerely hope that my chalk numbers to not hold up ... because sorry to say, that chalk has us losing to Houston by 5.

Wednesday's Games at MGM
Kansas vs Iowa State ... for 3rd place
Gonzaga vs Houston ... for 1st place

The Other Wednesday and Thursday games
Michigan vs Tennessee
Alabama vs Baylor
Auburn vs St Johns
SDSU vs Notre Dame
Maryland vs Oregon
Creighton vs Rutgers
UNLV vs Syracuse

Go Vols!!!

I'm going to chime in with .... I will be surprised if Kansas wins either game by 20 points.
I think it is a poor strategy to chase points at this point of the season. Win, yes.
But attempting a March Madness run utilizing a short bench chasing point in November is foolhardy.
This is a 3 games in 3 (or 4 days), you can get tired players hurt ... pushing them at this time of the year is like beating your horse with the stick when they come out of the gate. (SMH)
In the big scheme of things .... winning it all in Las Vegas would be nice, but it completely ignores the big picture.

I would opine that our Hall of Fame CRB will be more focused on turnovers, chemistry and playing 10 guys 10+ minutes ... rather than chasing points.

Appreciate the insight on the format. I guess the only unknown is who we play in the 3rd game. Obviously, winning all 3 games would be huge for the NCAA resume, regardless of who we draw in that 3rd game.
