The need for a portal qb

Not disagreeing but I don't see how you find a QB in the portal willing to come in and just a be backup unless he is not good enough to start anywhere else and then you wouldn't want him play. Glad Heuple gets paid the big $ to figure this out.
Ideally, if we are looking for a QB that can "compete" for a starting job, then we are looking for someone older with a some experience but never really hit it off at his old school. Or someone that was a back-up at his last school. Steve Angeli in the last portal (who we were also linked to in the spring) would have fit that profile. Or Beau Pribula. That is the types of QB I think we are hoping to find in the portal.

If Brandon can win the job, I would happily take 8-4 to see him get settled. Then we would have a true contender.
He has all the physical tools but the most important thing about playing QB is the mental aspect. We won't know where he is with that until we see him play. Part of why I've been wanting to see GMac so bad recently. Wonder if he can make good, quick decisions.

So you’re saying the Vols should simply stop recruiting high school QB’s since the staff is going to use the portal to recruit over them year after year. Yeah, that’s going to work out great. Or, the Vols become known as a team that consistently uses the portal to recruit over the high school QB’s to the point that eventually there won’t be a high school QB willing to look our way.
Meanwhile, you expect GMac and Merk to sit idle while the staff recruits another “more experienced” QB over them. How in the world will GMac or Merk get experience if they’re not given a shot? If I recall correctly, GMac was a 5 star at some point where as Merk was a 4 star. They’re both talented QB’s, GMac having a much higher ceiling.
I agree we should develop those on the roster. But This fan base will go insane if TN loses 3-4 games next year, even if we start GMac or Merk.

It makes it more impressive what UGA and others do every yr , having success despite starting a first yr QB with little to no experience.

Our system leans more on the QB which is why an older qb (more experience) has more success imo as he can see the field better.

If you can go to the portal and get a guy who has multiple years of eligibility left, that is 1000000% better route to go than recruiting (and investing) in 5 star QB's out of High School.

GMac will be ready by next year. Need to make him the man and bring Brandon in so he will be ready when his turn comes.
We don’t know he will be ready. He’s hardly got any reps. No meaningful reps. I don’t see them not hitting the portal, and at least having a competition.

Are you serious? 8 wins next season is a pipe dream. We'll be hard pressed to avoid a Florida type season next year.
On paper, you’re right, but there could be some major roster changes due to the coaching change dominoes. We have no idea what most rosters will look like. Lots of stuff happens between now and August. It definitely looks rough, but if we do well in the portal and the current guys stay, Im optimistic it could be decent.

Must have a portal QB like Joey for next year or we go 8-4 or 7-5
A RS freshmen helped lead Tennessee to the playoffs. It’s about complimentary football.

Maybe a few less big slash plays but longer sustained drives.

The defense will be better if the coaches attack the portal the right way. Help that defense by keeping our offense on the field longer.
Make your kick try’s Gilbert.

No pootbutt none effort toxic attitude on defense draining the life of the defense away. Won’t mention his name but he’s no longer a problem.

Don’t need a portal QB.
We have the NUMEBR ONE RANKED QB in HS coming to Rocky Top.

we don't know but coaches should know what they have.

Julian Sayin is in the heisman dicsussion and has the second best QBR rating.

His first year stats playing were

12 attempts 5 completions for 84 yards and 1 TD in 5 games. Not any meaningful reps...

We can assume it will be bad or good or let's see what we have...

Just backing up your statement...
