Who are the ideal D-Co candidates? Heupel should make a move.

Jerod Mayo would be the guy I’d want. NFL head coach experience. Former Tennessee linebacker.
ZERO College experience
ZERO D Coordinator experience at ANY level

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Mayo and is forever a VFL, but no thanks on DC right away.
Now IF he wants to entertain coming on board as a LB coach or DL coach, then i would entertain that thought.

That would be awesome but seems like a pipe dream. It might be that the next PSU head coach tries to retain him.

My wish list, if Banks were to accept a HC gig (may it be so) would be:

1. Knowles
2. Derek Mason
3. Blake Baker
Highly unlikely the position becomes available but if it did ,Dave Aranda at Baylor might be moving on.
Knowles
Aranda
Mason

Nobody complained about Banks last year. When this defense carried the Vols. It is college football. You lost a ton of talent on defense from last year. Then you lose two DBs who were going to start. You can only work with what you have. The Vols are playing a lot of young guys. They are going to make mistakes.
We didn't play but 2 good offenses last year and they made us look bad

Unless Banks gets a HC offer, he staying. What everyone doesn’t understand is that a ton of NIL went to Gibson, McCoy, and Carter with no rate of return.
Whats that got to do with Banks? His Zone coverages are horrible, and the secondary has been lost in big time games for years now. Healthy or not, dude chokes.

Banks is not a recruiter. Also he is not a good DC
That reminds me of the old quote from Buddy Ryan upon his first practice as the Philly Eagles Head Coach. Somebody asked him about how great Wilbert Montgomery, a previous year's All Pro Running back was looking. He said something like, "Wilbert can't run the middle worth a %$#@, can't block, can't catch a pass, and is ineffective running outside. Other than that he's great running back. "

Banks is a solid recruiter but not a great execution guy. Our defense has been playing FAR beneath our talent level. I know it’s young—but who would be an ideal candidate?
I really hope we are able to get some help from both LSU players and staff or crazy as it sounds Floridas defensive staff or players would help. I like how aggressive both defenses play

Right right, as an NFL head coach he probably knows nothing about defense or how to run a program.
We would be world class lucky to have him on staff.

Here’s the issue, Banks signed a 3 yr deal for damn good $ prior to this season. He’s not getting another offer for more money or 3 years anywhere else.

Second, expect Tennessee to spend big money in the portal for defensive players. DL, a LBer or 2 & especially DBs.

Banks most likely ain’t going anywhere….. unfortunately & DW sure ain’t giving him $4 mil NOT to coach.
When has Tennessee ever spent big money in the portal or been even remotely active whatsoever in the portal thus far? That’s not going to magically change this offseason.

There are no DC candidates because there is not an opening for DC in our program. There may be in the future but there isn't right now.

Talking about coaching candidates when there isn't an opening is an a waste of effort.
There is an episode of King of Queens where Kevin James just sits around drawing new logos for the Jets “just in case” they ever need one. The joke is played for how childish and pointless it is.

Thats how lots of these threads are starting to feel.

I hear it is. They spent big money on the recruiting class last year. I guess we’ll see.

.
Last year's defense was just an outlier? Or was it just that tremendous defensive coordinator we had last year?

Have to review coaches that have wroked with Heupel in the past for candidates. That is the typical pool that head coaches fish in. Not just one that might have worked for him, but he was on staff with or had some kind of close relationship in the past.

Enough with this. He played here. He’s never been a DC. If he hadn’t worn an orange jersey nobody would mention him. There are two guys who played here who have been DC’s before, with one of them on staff. Playing for UT isnt a qualification.

Im down with keeping Banks and spending in the portal.

So, Randy Shannon, Ryan Walters, or Barry Odom. Got it.

So? Chavis and Cutcliffe were never coordinators until they were promoted. Neither was Halzle. Vitello was never a head coach, neither has Erlander. Everyone gets their start sometime.

Ryan Walters would be about as good of a hire as he could make. He’s making $1.4 million a year right now. Would probably be hard from him to turn down over $2 million a year which is what Tennessee is currently paying Banks.

1-No you don’t just start somewhere.
2- Cutcliffe was the QB coach for the offensive coordinator who promoted him and had been on staff for TEN years before he was promoted. Basically the same with Halzle.
3 Chavis had previously been a DC at TWO different places. That right there is your first clue that you don’t know what you’re talking about.
4 Zero idea why you’re bringing TV and Elander into it as baseball is actually a completely different sport.
5 You don’t get your start as a coordinator in a 180 million dollar program, under a coach you’ve never coached for….AFTER taking a year off.
