The Official #20 Tennessee vs. Rice Game Thread, 8:30 PM ET, SEC Network

No, I said he shot 40% in HS and AAU which is reason to believe he’s probably a pretty solid shooter overall and should keep shooting, sorry if you couldn’t comprehend that, I’ve wasted enough time on you.
Maybe if you hear it straight from CRB you will understand I am right and you are wrong.

"But he shouldn't be 0-for-4 from three, he should be 0-for-2"

This quote is from CRB post game interview.

Burg was fantastic last night. If we get this version of him just 4 games into this brand of basketball for him, then what he could be down the road is very exciting. Not sure how many of you heard him on radio afterwards, but he sounds extremely intelligent with a very acute awareness of what he needs, and wants, to do to help this team and improve himself.

Totally agree. His overall feel for the system has drastically improved over the four games, and he is already becoming a vocal leader on the floor. He was far more locked in on defense, his 3-pt. stroke is solid, and he makes good decisions with the ball.

Regarding Ament, the argument over his 3-pt. shooting misses the point that his game isn't predicated on hitting 3's, but on being a versatile scorer. As the team gets more acclimated to getting him the ball in his spots, the 3's will come but more in the flow of the offense and more as a bonus rather than the primary plan.

At 6'11", he is a mismatch waiting to happen getting the ball at the elbow, the wing, or the low post depending on how he is being defended. If he is taking a lot of 3's, my view is that the offense isn't being properly run. This group has been together for a very short time, but the chemistry is clearly getting there.

It felt like we are shortening the rotation, as this was the first "real" team we played. I suspect once the competition ramps up, we'll be going with the more experienced players.

I view it as Jakobi, Abram, Ament, Cade, Felix, then Burg, Boswell, Carey, and Estrella if healthy.

Henderson and Brown will play depending on health and foul trouble, but i don't expect them to see regular minutes.

Appears to be a leader. He will be getting a lot of minutes.

Announcer kept talking about Aments nice stroke but imo it needs work from 3. He kindof pushes it

Terrific overall game last night. Gillespie's best all around game so far and Felix was awesome... Carey showed life for the first time this season. As for Ament shooting 3's CRB will let him know when it's a good shot or bad look.
Agree I felt like for the 1st time this season that its all starting to come together and player roles seem to be developing. Just in time for the real season starting.

According to Barnes, Brown will continue to get regular minutes. He commented that Brown should have gotten more minutes than he did last night.

Defense continues to improve. Check
Team continues to play better together. Check
Win by appropriate margin. Check
No injuries. Bummer!!!
Better shot % and selection by guards. Improving

Bonus points:
Carey having a really good showing.
Not missing a beat with BB not dressing.
10 players getting 10 plus minutes. This is not a typical CRB approach, it is a different twist (???) on player development and support. I personally love this approach whatever the actual rationale.

My only 'complaint' is the players were not able to convince the staff to use a review challenge.

They can all play but still seem out of sync most of the time. So far they have just been physically superior to the teams they have played. Barnes has looked at a lot of combinations which is the main point of early season games with 11 new players. He needs to nail it down soon because Houston, Louisville and Illinois are no joke. I think this will end up being a stronger inside out team than PB&J.

Dang man, if only CRB was taking in the air on the subject that you seem to be. Ament is going to be on the floor to work through the struggles from 3. That’s just gonna happen. You seem dug in like it will help make happen what your after..? Less minutes for one of the best freshmen in the country? Do you get he does so much more than making 3s at a proper clip.?

I noticed your last point as well. There were 2 or 3 occasions where they implored Barnes to use his review, but he refused. The obvious reason was because he didn’t want to do that against Lanier, even though Lanier wasn’t shy in using his early. I think Barnes using the review would have been a good way to show his players that he supported their efforts, and opinions.

Nate Ament from 3: 4 games in and he’s 4/18

We better cut him loose and use the spot for the next Alan Houston.

BTW, I heard on yesterday’s post game that Nate was 6 for 11 on contested shots. Whatever that means. I guess 0-2 when left open.

Hey dude, did you catch the post game interview last evening? Didn't think so

By the way, I did watch and listen to the whole thing!

You ARE quoting CRB, but you are applying your own private meaning to his words!

CRB uses the hook when is is upset... he did not YANK Ament off the floor.
That suggests that while Ament took 2 shots CRB did not want him to take ...it was not offensive enough to take him out of the game and put him on the bench.
It was ONLY TWO shots. That's all!!!

I think you are confusing CRB critic with CRB displeasure.

My point is Barnes thinks ament is shooting too many 3's which if you trace my conversation back is the exact point I was trying to make, nothing more nothing less. Wasn't saying ament is not a great player or bad teammate or anything other than he shoots too many 3's. By the way Barnes rarely "uses the hook" for any offensive mistake, it's usually defensive mistakes, rebounding, or lack of hustle.

I don’t think we’re going to beat those 3 teams. Maybe one of them. But I’m also not worried about it. This team will be much better in March and, should it reach its ceiling, will have a chance to make a very deep run.

March is my only concern.

It wasn't just that he was shooting 'too many 3's', it was the quality of the shots that Barnes is primarily concerned with. He sees Ament as a walking mismatch virtually anywhere on the floor, and wants him to get shots in the flow of the offense, preferably higher % shots in the paint or elbow area where he can shoot over most players.

Those 3's that bothered Barnes (he commented on Abram taking a couple as well) were forced shots completely out of the offensive flow. He would rather the offense be run and produce a drive and kick 3 in rhythm where there are offensive rebound opportunities, or better yet a high % shot in the paint.

And that is exactly what I am saying, he shoot's too many 3's. If he can shoot those 3's at a 40% clip let them fly, he isn't.
