Pretty strong criticism of it in the WSJ last week. I can’t remember the last Ken Burns piece I watched. I’d like to try to catch this one.

I always think how stupid giving us bulletin board material, but it seems when players on a team put out quotes like this, we shrivel up instead of coming out with our hair on fire. I would love to see our guys being the ones making confident/cocky statements like this then backing it up.

Heupel is an offensive coach, so we spend more NIL on offense than we do defense. We have to do something where we can spend more on defense. Tim Banks is not a horrible DC, IMO, but he lacks the talent he needs to run a proper defense. Last year, when the secondary wasn't such a liability, defense was fine. DL was better because we had space eaters like Omari and Elijah, and ONL was a disruptive force. McCoy and Gibson were playing great at CB. Everything clicked. But this year, we failed to replace the missing parts, so the defense often collapses. That said, Banks is a horrible safeties coach. Apparently, he has trouble identifying talent at the position. Or maybe developing it. Or maybe both. I just know we haven't seen great safety play while he's been here.

I am of a somewhat similar opinion.

My biggest issue is what has caused our complete lack of tackling fundamentals this year? If guys just made the standard tackles we would have a defense that is more in line with what we’ve fielded in recent years. I haven’t looked it up, but I’d have to imagine we are amongst the nation’s worst in yards allowed after contact.

You may be right, but outside of Georgia and Oklahoma I don't think I've seen too many outstanding tackling teams this year.

I don't think so, Virginia Tech has committed to spend to compete in the ACC. Franklin has contacts in the region. He'll recruit well enough. It's competition in an area we've been successful recently. To think he won't have any real effect on us is nonsense. It will make things tougher for us.

When did a 68% winning percentage become mediocre? I mean 8 wins a season average is underperforming, especially at a Penn State...but Frank Beamer for his career at VA Tech was a 66.2% winner.

I actually think because of how bad the ACC is right now Franklin likely wins 10 games a season there...will just be curious how long it takes him to build things back up. Because they have not recruited well at all in the last few years.

Cant give other teams or coaches any credit for their accomplishment.. it always goes back to the SEC bs conversation...

Some of it is what you emphasize in practice—practicing tackling takes a certain mindset. I have no idea if that is Banks’s style or not.

Youth matters, too.

But a lot of missed tackles are a result of being a half a step slow. A player arriving in the right spot on time has a better opportunity to square up and tackle, while a guy just a step late is more likely to rely on the kinds of arm tackles and lunges that don’t bring a guy down. Being slow can be physical (not fast enough or juked by a superior athlete) mental (not diagnosing the play or angle right) or some combo of both.
