Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

As always, who do you get? Majors won a title at Pitt but couldn't at UT.

Everybody thinks they should be better than they are. The reality is that title years are supposed to be a rarity, not something 30 different teams honestly expect each year.

Majors as first year coach at Pitt got the 25 scholarship limit lifted and the university primed to pump out funds for a lot more. His first year recruiting class was somewhere between 65 and 100 kids including a guy named Dorsett. Jackie Sherrill (Asst HC and DC) said 76; others say a lot more like 100; they also picked up some promising Jr college talent which may have affected how the number got tabulated since there were some non-freshmen in the first year haul.

The thing is, if you can recruit enough talented people, there are bound to be some really good players in the haul (and a bunch of talent denied other teams). It's probably a lot like how ivy league schools work - not as much talent added by the school as making sure you really pick up the cream of the crop with immaculate connections to put grads in great positions.

The NCAA put an end to that kind of crap (which was likely illegal in the first place) before Majors came to UT. Otherwise, Majors may really have been someplace between a good and a mediocre coach; he had Frank Broyles as a mentor. A lot of times a "great" coach is more defined by his staff. Fulmer was pretty good with Cutcliffe, not so much with Sanders, and not at all with Clawson.

The nine game conference schedule isn't a disadvantage. If the selection committee penalizes the SEC for beating itself up and puts in a disproportionate amount of Big10 schools who would be average in the SEC the playoff ratings will dwindle. IMO the SEC going to 9 games will force the other conferences and ND to step up their game and competition level.

That seems like wishful thinking. ND attached its star to the ACC without really being a full fledged part of the ACC, and the big10 has it all nice and comfy and with no incentive to change. Both ND and the big10 will have all the cover they need from the same press corps that have provided them cover all along. tOSU, MI, and maybe PSU can out Bama Bama a lot of the time - size and number of grads and supporters; that's especially true in the NIL age where the composite fund base is the key issue. Likely even oil state money doesn't trump the big10 funding, and catholic funding through the ages has seemed bottomless.

Yeah Oregon and Ohio State already been on that plan for 2 or 3 years now. Outspend every other team in the country. It worked for OSU last year...but they just got hot at the right time with a healthy B10 team that had only played 2 decent teams all year and made that playoff run IMO. Hasnt panned out for ORE yet...but it could this year. I would say dropping $30M plus yearly like they both allegedly have been doing IS likely the best strategy. Other teams like Texas and aTm have tried to do the same but not had those results yet.

It seemed last year that the handwriting on the wall with regard to tOSU was the "come to Jesus" meeting the team held after the MI loss. It's just one of those things you never want to hear about another team if you are coming up in the schedule. We and all the rest of the tOSU opposition were doomed before ever setting foot on the field that night last year. That loss to MI (and the team getting its chit together) turned a mob or gifted but leaderless rabble into an army, and all who came later paid the price.

We had the lead at half and LSU had to play the 2nd half without their starting QB and RB.....damn it

It's traditionally bad when TN is forced to play a backup QB - just something you never want to see. We routinely make second string QBs leading Heisman candidates. Sometimes even KY wide receivers playing QB ...

If you have current setup and reduction in regional ranking biases, we were slam dunk or likely playoff team 14/20 years from 85-04. Only 2/21 years since.

16/41. 2/5 years in playoff is a reasonable benchmark.

Thats 40%. I said every 3years on average or 33% but I agree that 40% playoffs is a reasonable but probably optimistic expectation.

These clowns calling for firing coaches right now are just that. Clowns.

I would agree 7-5 would be a failure. And would be a strike against Heupel. But I just don't see us losing both.

After Nico left everyone assumed it was a rebuild year, especially with no WRs returning, 4 new OL starters, lost like 6 DL, and then had 2 more get injured, and our top 2 CBs get injured too. 8-4 as a rebuild year with all those issues isn't bad. 7-5 does feel like a failure.

If/when Heupel settles in with consistent 8-4/9-3 as his ceiling then yeah it's orobably time to upgrade if there is a viable option. But we aren't close to that.

I would still like to see some changes. As mentioned special teams is a week spot now. I would go hire SC's guy.

This 100%

All this talk about " AI gonna take our jobs and kill us all"...

We put men on the moon 60 freaking YEARS AGO...

BUT you can type:

Gippopotamus... OR

Gsterectomy

Gelicopter pilot

And these freaking keyboards CANNOT figure it out??

Get 43 letters correct and the 1st letter wrong...and computers/phones are truly incapable of figuring out what you were intending. Don't hold your breath folks.

Also apparently I had a heart attack before 50yo at 5ft10in and 175lbs. So yay...Drove myself to the ER yesterday with chest pain and I had one. Am back home now and fine but I have follow ups with the cardiologist etc and now I am on BP medicine and aspirin regimen dangit. I am thankful to the Lord to still be alive and this kinda sucks though to be honest. I have a thing with my daughter tonight though and I am not telling her. She is 17yo and the closest human to perfect I have ever known and deserves to never, ever have to worry about me.

I would appreciate a little prayer though if yall can spare a minute or 2. I want to meet my grandkids and I am still dealing with some mild chest pain from time to time and it scares me a little to be honest.

Since we were talking most painful losses. Outside of the natty this is my favorite win.

Thats the Stevens 250yds in Gainesville game right? I might watch that with my daughter tonight. Love me some Will Overstreet. THE baddest white guy I have personally ever seen at UT in person was Olineman Charles McRae. He was listed at 6ft4in 305lbs as a Tackle IIRC and we had tix like 18yd line 12 or 13 rows from the field back then when I was a kid. The team was on the field fully dressed about to run back in the locker room soon to come out for the Power T ....he had something wrong so he took off his pads and Tshirt for some reason and dude was jacked with a 6pack at 305lbs. He was a monster. Paired with Antone Davis at
Tackle and both were drafted top 3 rounds IIRC. We ran the ball off tackle a lot because we had 2 all SEC Tackles that year.

Prayer for you

Thanks OB struggling a bit to be honest man. Thank you.
