Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

Earlier this morning some posters mentioned Heupel not being himself, seeming down.

Been thinking about that some this morning. I've read here that Banks wasn't really his first choice but what kind of forced on him. It's been rumored Heupel has been instructed he needs to cut some bait on staff.

Could it be that he's upset he's being forced to shed some staff here rather keep and resents the fact he kind of got stuck with Banks?

I'm not trying to invent scenarios but I could see that weighing heavy on him.
That’s pretty interesting to be honest. And maybe that’s happening. If it is that may not be a bad thing. It seems Heupel doesn’t like to get rid of coaches. And that’s a bad trait to have. In my opinion a head coach should be evaluating his entire staff every year. Constantly trying to get better. Maybe Danny White has been talking to him and telling him that he may need to replace some guys.

Now some may think that’s a bad thing but I don’t.

What I find exciting is that Spillman has really started showing his talent.

Now leads the teams in total tackles and started the year as the 4th option at LB behind Carter, T, and Bolton...

He's very obviously our best LB and if we can get him and Carter (close to 100%) out there Saturday we could see a really good defensive performance against a bad offense.

Banks was not “forced on him.” A bunch of people told us no before he was hired. If anything, he probably doesn’t want to fire someone who took the job when nobody else wanted it. Also, firing people just sucks, especially when it’s someone you know well and like.
Not directed at you but you said he took the job when nobody wanted it and I agree. Why would you not want the job? I realize it is probably because the defense in on the field a lot because the offense may go 3 and out or score in 1:30 and the defense has to go right back out on the field. If the coordinator was aggressive, that doesn't have to be the case. When it is 3rd and 5, don't give them a 10 yard cushion and your first steps be retreat steps. We bring a lot of the issues upon ourself by the way the defense is called. We need a coordinator that is aggressive and not a bend but don't break coordinator and the time they are on the field goes down drastically.

You're looking at the "taking the job now" aspects, when Heupel was hired it was a pending NCAA investigation and taking over a 3-7 team with a nearly empty roster.

I hope we only see Carter (if he can play), Spillman, and Perlotte at linebacker against florida.

This. If you force a 3 and out you're not on the field that long. Allowing long time consuming drives is what wears out a defense.

I don't think T is as bad as folks make out, but he's a coverage liability for sure. Spillman and Perlotte have shown they're far better than any other LBs we have in that area.

Just gotta hope Bolton isn't out there because the talent/youth have figured it out enough to jump him. I don't mind these walk-ons earning their way...but man when you can see on the field how behind they are from a speed level it's frustrating.

This should be the game where our coaches go all out. This is a team we all hate and a game at a place where we don’t win often. If they want the fans fully back and inspired for next season, they need this game.

I want to see trick plays (we never do), punt returns (we hardly do), and new wrinkles (like UGA that disappeared).

You go all out to win this game and have some juice for next year. And you essentially had three weeks to prepare for this team.

It's funny how when Boo committed he was reported as a 3 star. But when he left he's reported as a former 4 star and was the all conference this or that.
Boo Carter has special athletic ability but he has other things working against him, I really feel bad for him, he had an opportunity to be great.

Good point...do you think that changes things if we were hiring a new defensive coordinator next year?

The ball is rolling now I think the job is far easier to hire for than it has been in previous years. We pulled some quality positional coaches last time we went outside the promote within route.

Although I do think there is a good chance Banks leaves this offseason they'd first look within. (Alan Williams for example)

I'd be happy to see the OL/DL just play with some damn emotion/attitude. Get back to finishing blocks through the whistle and putting Gators in the damn dirt every play.

Knowing what we know now. Would it have been better for us if we would have hired Schiano instead?
You're not going to get anyone to agree with that I predict, but I will absolutely concede there's a great possibility we would. I think Schiano's lack of success this time around at Rutgers has to do with the limitations at every job that's now limited: NIL. He was actually doing alright when he first took back over. I thought the PSU nonsense was just moral grandstanding (isn't' there a word for that?) because the fans thought they could hire a better coach than Currie. Turns out the guy they were just fine with was exponentially worse.

There is a lot of contradicting information surrounding this team, particularly the defense. I can't help but have a bad feeling about that being a bad sign.

Yeah and I am going to vent a pet peeve of mine. Saying a coach likes to play bend but don’t break is a misnomer. Coaches are typically forced to play that way because they don’t have the talent to be more aggressive. Banks would be dramatically more aggressive if he had his two injured corners as he proved that last year. Not claiming he’s a great d-coordinator but he would be much better if he had some more talent. He also deserves blame for that lack of talent.
