Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

As I said Kirby and Venables were exceptions to the rule bc they had longstanding sustained success under the greatest coaches in the country. Lanning too. Kirby was the DC under the best coach ever for 8 years in the SEC
Therefore, a power program can hire a coach without head coaching experience and it’s not a “bad look.” That’s the issue we’re discussing here because you claimed the opposite.

And obviously, if they can hire one with NO head coaching experience, they can hire one with mid major head coaching experience. Because that’s at least SOME head coaching experience.

You hire the guy you think can be successful. Period. There are myriad backgrounds that produce such coaches, as history has proven. And many splash hires flop (Kelly at LSU, Fisher at aTm, Riley hasn’t been great at USC, for examples).

If winning the press conference were the objective, Tennessee would’ve been better off if James Franklin had taken the job in 2021 instead of Josh Heupel. We should all be glad he didn’t.
