Wait--aren't those the things that happen daily over weeks of practice? This is accurate! I, like others, disagree, with his philosophy on it, but he’s the HC. I personally like coaches that play all their players early and often, competition is good , keeps everyone engaged, motivated, hungry.
Heupel has shown he doesn’t trust players at many positions and often it seems detrimental to the program….because he refuses to play talented freshman unless foced to.
They need real in game experienceWait--aren't those the things that happen daily over weeks of practice?
The ones we fans see playing have earned the staff's trust over previous days. The staff sees them play every day--live and on video--so they go into gameday knowing what each player is ready for and capable of handling in a game.
Heupel's MO ever since he has been at Tennessee is to play starters through the third period unless Tennessee has gotten into the 50s on offense. Then he might go with reserves in middle of the third quarter. If still in the 30s going into the 4th, starters continue to play. That is his way of doing business.
It has gotten asked every year about getting QBs expereince and that is how he goes about it.. been pretty consistent with that process and I wouldn't expect it to change.. Think back to Nico's freshman year for examples.
Agree he does this - but not sure the MO is any different than how other coaches handle this. Looked at a few random games with other schools where they were blowouts and generally the starting QB still played a series or two in the second half depending upon the score.
As this thread is related to the New Mexico State game we were only up 21-3 at half and ANY COACH would still have their starters in the game with that score.
We can complain about it all we wantRather that complaining about this ALL the time, we really should be thankful that we actually have games where there is an option to play the backups. Some of our opponents have not had 3 opportunities to do so. And next year, with 9 SEC conference games plus 1 game against a P4 conference opponent - the opportunities will dwindle.
I personally have no problem with CJH decisions on when to insert backups especially since his cadence for doing so pretty much aligns with how other teams handle this.
You do not put a back-up in when one or two scores can allow your opponent to be back into the game. You just don't.
