Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

No matter what the reason...those vets didn't coach themselves. These braindead idiot "fans" of ours need to understand that you can't blame the coaches for the crap, and not praise them for the great. They have shown the capability to coach a elite defense...they did not just forget....just like Heup did not suddenly get stupid and forget how to coach offense because he didn't have a QB for two years that could do some of the things necessary for his offense to operate at full capacity.
Heup has definitely got more afraid.

Can someone explain why this place is worse when we're good as a program than when we were terrible as a program?

All the arguments today are the same ones that drove out Johnny Majors and Phil Fulmer - too many 3 loss seasons, etc.

If these people had any memory they would know during the 2010s many people looked longingly at those multitudes of 9+ win seasons with top 25 finishes during the Majors/Fulmer era as evidence of Tennessee’s past glory.

The irony is thick.

We are back exactly to where we were in the Majors- Fulmer era - consistently talented and competitive and in the hunt, which is Tennessee football at its best in the modern era.

Haven’t heard that. I would imagine he’s not in the greatest of moods these days since he is staring down the possibility of a 7-5 season.
Yeah he looked pissed off

Those thinking he looked "checked out" must have anti social personality disorder because they can't read emotions to save their life.

Sure there are. They claim they have been Bama fans their whole life. They migrate back when we started winning. Fair weather fans may be a better term bc there are several that are more invested now than they were 6 yrs ago. I know that I can talk a huge difference at the stadium.
Those are despicable people.

That’s not true at all. Majors was fired bc high end boosters were afraid that we were going to lose Fulmer to another head coaching job. Fulmer was fired bc he was struggling with recruiting and record from 2005-2008. He was fired after starting the season 3-6 in 2008.

2005 and 2008 were the only bad years. Was not a string of bad years in a row from 05-08

Agreed on how their tenures ultimately ended, but I recall the complaining in the years that led up to that - when we were still pushing through very solid seasons. It was just as obnoxious as what we hear today.

He had two horrible years. I just listed the years to show how horrible we was without David Cutcliffe. We had some really bad blowouts in 2006-2007 even though we backed into playing in an SEC Chanpionship in 2007.

True… people are going to complain every year but that had nothing to do with why they were pushed out.

Positives - Tennessee ranked almost every poll since 2022 season great achievement

Negatives - No more fallback sanctions SEC getting tougher and more competitive. Still haven’t legitimately staked our name for SEC Championship contention much less National Championship contention

Overall looking at solid not great. Every other sport competes and won a sec championship why can’t football? The conference is just as strong in those 4 sports and in some cases stronger.

Can be appreciative of the elimination of the worst period in Tennessee history but also realize it’s year 5 and this is like mini NFL now coaches arent lasting. You can change rosters yearly now no more 10 year rebuild etc Hopefully coach Heupel makes a few changes. God forbid no more losses in the regular season. It won’t be pretty. OU was bad enough

The guy considered the best coach in college football RIGHT NOW IN TODAY’S ENVIRONMENT (Kirby) was literally the same hire (successful NC coordinator) that Stoops was for OU in 1998. He had zero head coaching experience when hired.

It’s still about hiring the right guy. And the right guy can come from a myriad of experiences/backgrounds…including no P4 HC experience.

Penn State could hire Matt Campbell and fail. They could hire Alex Golesh and fail. Or either could succeed. It’s up to their AD to figure that out without worrying about how it “looks.” It’s about winning on the field, not the press conference. I know that hurts the egos of the American sports media.
As I said Kirby and Venables were exceptions to the rule bc they had longstanding sustained success under the greatest coaches in the country. Lanning too. Kirby was the DC under the best coach ever for 8 years in the SEC

Anyone else worried about Heup? Looked like he didn’t want to be there yesterday, lack of emotion etc. Is the pressure getting to him?
I wondered that myself after the OU game.

Although I think yesterday was more about the opponent.

With how hesitant Heup is going for it, and being aggressive I just wonder if the expectations have gotten to him. In 22 he had nothing to lose because nobody expected anything and he was balls to the wall, but since then he's been a shell of himself.
