everybody is stuck.

The foundation of the sport that allowed and rewarded meritocracy in the building of a program and the development of players into NFL picks over a 4-5 year span has been destroyed. It has become a game where chance, the roll of the dice, has too much impact on outcomes: injuries, referee calls at key moments in key games, a coordinator guessing right on a blitz or screen play, calling a "crazy Ivan left" and getting lucky. Building enough depth and flexibility into a team for one season has become a Wall Street creative financing exercise. The game on the field is just the weekly update on the stockholders report.
The intermediate goals that are psychologically necessary for human achievement over time have been removed. There's no longer a ramp to the top--a Division championship, then a Conference championship, gained recognition, and finally earning an invitation to a championship bowl game. Today, there's only In or Out. Better luck next year.

Football program architects and careful team builders need not apply.
