The Official #23 Tennessee vs. New Mexico State Game Thread, 4:15 PM ET, SEC Network

I agree.

But outside of pride and using the time to continue developing the young guys the season is now meaningless.

The playoffs created that.

The bowl games mean nothing and most players will sit out that are headed to NFL.
Well then the playoff has ruined college football. I remember very well when a 9-3 season and a quality bowl was a lot to play for and a successful season. Not a great season, but one to be satisfied with.
I personally hate the playoff. The game as a whole was much better when teams went to their conference tie-in bowl and the champion was determined by vote. I would even say you got a truer champion.
I remember several Vol teams with 1 or 2 losses and a big bowl win (Sugar, Orange or Cotton, even Citrus or Cap One bowls) that are celebrated as great seasons that are a big part of our tradition as a historical powerhouse program.
Greed has ruined the college game.

Gosh I get so tired of this bs from some of this fan base. Several months ago everybody supported him 100% for telling Nico to hit the road & saying they would perfectly happy with a 6-7 loss season just to get out of that mess. Then they were able to get Joey very late in the process, again many excited but have turned on him, too. I just can’t believe so many forget where we’ve been the last 20 years & what Heup has been able to do since he walked in to the dumpster fire we were in. GB🍊

I think that you need to keep playing as a matter of momentum going into next year. I do agree that the bowls are meaningless. The only upside is that you get extra practices and some early playing time for the guys who will be starting next year.

I'll bet you money we will not be better on defense. If we dont make staff changes on that side of the ball I can guarantee you we won't be better on that side of the ball.

And it's very much up in the air on offense. You said, "if we get good QB play" Im not 100% sure we will. The run game will have to improve to help the passing game IMO. Running game was expected to take a step back this year with losing Sampson. But it feels like we have digressesd in the run game as the season had gone on and its now starting to affect the passing game.
We’ll see, Our opinions mean nothing. I feel like we will be better. We got a lot of O line returning and have good skill talent. We got young D lineman like Utley and Campbell who should both take big strides in the off season. We have to continue to grow and build depth but we have a young team abd recruiting is going well. Enough positives to remain optimistic. We do have to get stronger up front on the interior D line. Our O-Line needs to continue to push and get stronger as it has a chance to be very good. GBO

Im beginning to think that Heupel has reached his peak at TN. Notwithstanding a playoff birth last season, Heupel’s team plays undisciplined football and has done so for the entirety of his tenure.

Rumblings on the street that Garner going back to Auburn —— he is and has been the bright spot of TN’s defense and defensive recruiting. If he does leave, he would be catastrophic.

The schedule next season (and the following season) is much more difficult. And Heupel is a guy who hires friends over competence. The question in my mind is whether he will adapt and change - I doubt it.

half of these posters weren’t even on here during the 20 years of wandering, their coals were stoked 5 years ago and think the sky is falling this season, they sure weren’t in the stands during loses to Wyoming or Georgia St, I can’t imagine going back to that but the goal of the minority is to run a coach off for not winning 10 games every year, I guess Texas better run Sark off too for 3 loses so far. Better be careful what you wish for

1989, 1995, 2001 and 2022 are the only ones in the past 36 years that meet that criteria. We could count 1970, 1971 and 1972 I suppose if we're talking 1965-present

True… but even before the playoffs, teams knew whether or not they were in the championship hunt.

1985 and pretty much most of the 90’s we’re strong seasons also. 97 was conference champs. 98 was conference and national champs. 99 was a strong season and probably more talented than 98. 67-70 were all strong seasons as well. GBO

Yes, I know but that wasn't his criteria. He said years when we had 1 or 2 regular season losses and then won a bowl game to make it a good year. Those years I listed were exactly that. C'mon, follow the subject

He was following the general meaning I was referring to, which would include a few more years still not listed.
C'mon, color outside the lines once in awhile.

Yeah. Really no need to even have the bowl games anymore when half the team is going to opt out.

Of course '85 and '98 were great years. That Sugar Bowl win over Miami is my favorite and IMO the Vols' most impressive win in modern times. We were conference champs in '97 but getting out asses humiliated by Nebraska took the sprinkle out of the star.

I remember in the mid-90s so many people complained our only meaningful season was the '85-'86 Sugar Bowl season, so the "entitlement" mentality was relevant even back then.
We have a sizable minority of our fanbases that are hicks that don't understand the sport in general

None of which is going to get TN there
I think we beat Vandy, but I think the Florida game is a toss up. We will have to play better than we did last Saturday to beat either of them. We simply CAN NOT HAVE TURNOVERS, if we are are going to win either of them.

No actually I was just acknowledging we have had many great years. I wasn’t following your convo personally. I assumed you knew about them other years I was simply adding other great years. I wasn’t trying to argue or make you look bad. We were the winningest team in the country during the 90’s not every year was only a 1 or 2 lost year but we were a national threat most of them. I wasn’t following your argument with another person. Tennessee has had several good era’s throughout history. 2010-2020 wasn’t one of them, but Tennessee has started climbing again since 2021. We will climb back to the top once again. GBO

Need to have a separate tourney in Dec where teams 12-25 play for the final 12th spot. Whoever wins then goes into the tourney as the final team. This makes pretty much every top 25 team have a chance and makes the entire season meaningful.
