Vols just offered a new OT prospect, and he's immediately coming to campus for an OV. He's got OVs scheduled to WVU and OU later this month and has been to Minnesota officially already. Allen Trieu from 247 described him as "New to football but a legit monster of a physical specimen."

Edge/SDE stud Jordan Carter will be back on campus for an OV 2 weeks after coming for the OU game. Big big visit as he's got hometown GT the week after and then (potentially) AU the week after. Vols seem to have some momentum here.

Stud 2027 Edge Mekai Brown will be here, too.

Elsewhere, Edge Dre Quinn will be at OSU. Unclear if Jaylen Thomas, Micah Smith, JJ Finch (not going to OSU, apparently), or Amari Latimer will be traveling this weekend.

Notable 2027s (247 Comp ranking)
OT Maxwell Hiller (#10) - ELITE OT. Was here for Big Orange BBQ in late May. Bama currently leading after his visit there last weekend, but he's not in a rush. "They were at No. 2 with South Carolina at No. 1, it has flip flopped." Bigtime visit for us.
Edge Mekai Brown (#56)
IOL Jordan Agbanoma (#76) - elite offer list including OSU, A&M, UGA etc. Named to the Poly bowl and said ""Texas A&M, Nebraska, Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia are standing out"
WR Dennis Tua'one (#79) - from Provo, so...
LB Ja'Bios Smith (#97) - dude has been on the list for like 4 different games this season and honestly I'm not sure if he's been here yet :)
CB Allen Evans (#104)
DL Joseph Buchanan (#178) - elite offer list
LB Mikhai Allen (#189)
DL Karlos May (#199) - major target for Bama, and they are/were somewhat expecting him back for a 2nd weekend in a row. OSU also involved
LB Tate Wallace (#225) - offered at Night at Neyland camp
CB Chase Johnson (#239) - has been here a ton but first game visit this season
RB David Segarra (#243)
OT Antonio Keefer (#269) - Memphis; has elite offer list
DL Kadin Fife (#280) - will be committing to Tennessee next weekend
WR Iveon Lewis (#288) - here for UGA, too
OT Junior Saunder (#304)
OT Carter Jones (#326) - offer list much more impressive than his ranking; mother was a Vol hostess and rowing team, and he was here in April and June
WR Ja'Hyde Brown (#353) - priority for Bama and per Tom Loy closing in on a decision

what would it take to get a **** or ***** safety on campus?
I am ashamed that it took way longer than I want to admit before I finally realized that you meant a 4 star and a 5 star safety instead of trying to figure out what cuss words you used...

Yes, but we do eventually need to recruit some top flight high school safeties.
I think we’re gonna like Combay a lot. I don’t care what his ranking is. But as the Sasquatch said, we’re going to have to go to the portal for 2026 help.

I do think Walton and Combay will be very good down the road though.

100% agree. Odds are that one of Wyatt/Thompson/Mcclain end up good too.

You'd like to think we could nail one of those evaluations.

I do question why we take the most chances and put our faith in the staff's ability to project and mine diamonds in the rough at the one position we have seen struggle the most under this coaching staff, and under the tutelage of a guy (Banks) who allegedly does the least amount of work in recruiting.

That strategy would seem to make sense at QB, WR, RB, or DT...all areas where we have seen it pay dividends in the past. Safety has just felt like a revolving door of poor evals who transfer or never play. Thank goodness for the portal to have allowed us to cover up some of those mistakes.

I am only assuming. Theory could be that if you are elite at DL and CB then safety doesn't need to be elite. And so in this era of deciding where to spend the money, that's the most logical place to not spend big money. 🤷

I agree with the theory...it is sound...and it seems to be the line of thinking we are employing. I have no problem with it being the method.

But if that is the case, you have got to do a better job evaluating and work harder in recruiting to discover those guys. They are definitely out there, but Banks doesn't exactly have the reputation of being a guy who turns over every stone and beats the bushes in recruiting.

If that is going to be the method by which you recruit and fill the position, you have to work harder in recruiting and/or you have to be an elite developer.

The body of work suggests that Banks is either a lazy recruiter, an awful evaluator, or an awful developer to have not had a single playmaker he recruited out of high school at that position in 5 years.

Heupel has no shot at taking the next step with Banks as his DC! Lazy recruiting and poor schemes. I really hope that is addressed this offseason.

I really had hoped last year was the start of a turnaround, but it seems like it was the anamoly that was just a perfect blend of experienced and talented guys on the line (lots of them, and a lot of hits in the transfer portal, partucularly in the secondary. Even still, arguably, our "best" safety was a walk-on. Injuries have certainly played a role this year, but we aren't simply one elite CB away from a respectable defense.
