How many Ole Miss games have you actually watched? Kiffin is a fantastic play caller. But again some of his in game decisions are mind numbingly dumb and lose the game for his team. Records are almost identical. One has been to the playoffs, one has lost to Kentucky.Kiffin is the better coach just based on his willingness to go find a solid DC.
It is what it is.
This year one is going to the playoffs, and one will be lucky to go to a Florida bowl. How many Ole Miss games have you actually watched? Kiffin is a fantastic play caller. So, because their defensive stats are better than ours, that makes him a good DC? Ole Miss and Tennessee have played four common opponents so far this season. I'd say that makes for a decent sample size. Here are the defensive stats against those four common opponents:Just compare the two defenses and you tell me.
Now let’s look at the defensive stop rate rankings. So, because their defensive stats are better than ours, that makes him a good DC? Ole Miss and Tennessee have played four common opponents so far this season. I'd say that makes for a decent sample size. Here are the defensive stats against those four common opponents:
Ole Miss
Kentucky: 23 points/359 total yards/187 passing yards/172 rushing yards allowed
Arkansas: 35 points/526 total yards/305 passing yards/221 rushing yards allowed
Georgia: 35 points/510 total yards/289 passing yards/221 rushing yards allowed
Oklahoma: 26 points/359 total yards/223 passing yards/136 rushing yards allowed
Tennessee
Kentucky: 34 point/476 total yards/330 passing yards/146 rushing yards allowed
Arkansas: 31 points/496 total yards/256 passing yards/240 rushing yards allowed
Georgia: 44 points/502 total yards/304 passing yards/198 rushing yards allowed *6 points and 25 yards came in OT
Oklahoma: 33 points/351 total yards/159 passing yards/192 rushing yards allowed *7 points scored by Ok defense
Out side of the passing yards in the Kentucky game, those stat lines look nearly identical.
I agree with you as far as the bottom line. If you want to say our defense has been bad, that is absolutely fair. It's just hard for me to then turn around and praise Ole Miss' DC when their defense against four common opponents has been pretty much as bad as ours was. That is not me defending our defense. You said Kiffin was willing to go out and hire a solid DC. I am simply questioning whether Pete Golding is a good DC. Against common opponents, he has performed pretty much the same as Tim Banks has without our top 2 corners. He also has benefitted from facing LSU's offense instead of Bama's. By the end of the season, the two teams will have played 6 common SEC opponents. The other two? Ole Miss faced LSU and South Carolina while we will have faced Bama and Vandy. For reference, Vandy and Bama are the #2 and #8 scoring offenses in the SEC while LSU and South Carolina are #14 and #16.Now let’s look at the defensive stop rate rankings.
We can agree to disagree. I have no interest in a back-and-forth over the respective defenses. The bottom line is that Mississippi will be going to the playoff and UT will not. I’m also of the opinion that banks, Martinez, and the strength and conditioning coach need to be replaced.
I feel very confident in stating that until the UT defense gets better, they will not win an SEC championship or compete for a national championship.
If you are comfortable with this defense, as it stands, then you are comfortable with the results they produce.
I am not. This is the root of our disagreement. And I would not be surprised to see this defense fail to meet my expectations at least one more time this season.
UT needs a meat-eater DC. Let him pick his assistants. Get another meat-eater at S&C.I agree with you as far as the bottom line. If you want to say our defense has been bad, that is absolutely fair. The root of the disagreement is the point you brought up about defensive cords when replying to me. Someone brought up stats and you want to change the subjects. Comical. Now let’s look at the defensive stop rate rankings.

I made two points. One is that Kiffin is willing to make a change, where Heupel apparently is not.The root of the disagreement is the point you brought up about defensive cords when replying to me. Someone brought up stats and you want to change the subjects. Comical.
I believe he will be gone within three years. He can have the pick of the state of Louisiana. TN think they have to go to Texas and Fla and GA and California to get top players. He will have an entire state to himself. If LSU offered the right money and conditions, he will be gone.I’m @ lunch listening to 104.5 zone as they interview Chris Phillips and the LSU job. He said there are rumors that Heup is on the LSU list and LSU is on Heup’s short list of other college jobs.
He then stated TN fans don’t give Heup the credit he deserves, instead complaining about not making playoffs. And, TN is not a perennial playoff team yet a 3-4 loss team.
When asked he said TN is not a top six destination for head coaches. He said we would fall in top half. He also said he wouldn’t include Florida and unsure about aTm.
Surely Heup won’t get an offer but he was correct about Napier and Kelley, too, losing his job and the fact LSU trying to find just cause. He said Heup would listen to LSU.
I don’t see it but I am blinded by orange glasses- esp. when he said LSU is top six job - not TN.
Ohio state, Bama, UGA, LSU, Texas, USC, Oregon, and I think Notre Dame were his top coaching destinations.
Thoughts?
Edit- I listened to the interview again. Phillips said he’s heard Heup would entertain leaving TN and definitely listen to LSU. Plus, LSU admin is confident Heup would leave TN for LSU if offered the job. The outside noise by the minority of our fan base is annoying as apparently Heup hears the. Could you imagine him leaving for LSU and taking Brandon Faizon w/ him?
