If Merk is taking care of business as usual and has only told the coaches that he plans to enter the portal, then how does that hurt team chemistry? If he plays on Saturday, then Heupel has a good reason to put him on the field. That's all that matters anyways.
He shouldn't let it known that he intends to leave.

The coaches have spent the off week talking to players so they can get a grasp on who's likely hitting the portal and what they're going to need to do to manage the roster. Merk has likely only told the coaches...I highly doubt he's telling a bunch of guys on the team that he's leaving. AP gets a lot of info from guys on the coaching staff...so that's where it's coming from.

Believe it or not, it's possible for some guys to handle things the right way when they decide they'll be hitting the portal...and that includes telling the coaches so they can plan for it, continuing to do everything they can to help the team while they're here, and not complaining to teammates about their situation. Merk's obviously not going to factor in at QB after this season and he knows it, but he hasn't quit on the team. Having a "don’t let the door hit you" attitude towards every player that transfers is short-sighted.
