The Leafs are the Dallas Cowboys of the NHL. They are making tons of money. They are not really trying to win championships.
I went to chat gpt after typing the above to ask it why it's more economically viable for teams like the Cowboys and the Leafs to not actually try to win championships. I'll share the conclusion but the whole exchange is worth reading. Just ask it what I said I did.
In Short
The reason it’s more “economically viable” to run a team like the Leafs is:
For the Leafs, winning a championship would not meaningfully increase revenue, but trying to win one would increase costs and risk.
Therefore, the rational economic strategy is:
- Be competitive
- Have marketable stars
- Make the playoffs
- Sell hope
- Avoid high-risk “all-in” moves
Championships are emotionally valuable but not economically necessary for a franchise that already prints money.
