Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

The Leafs are the Dallas Cowboys of the NHL. They are making tons of money. They are not really trying to win championships.

I went to chat gpt after typing the above to ask it why it's more economically viable for teams like the Cowboys and the Leafs to not actually try to win championships. I'll share the conclusion but the whole exchange is worth reading. Just ask it what I said I did.

In Short

The reason it’s more “economically viable” to run a team like the Leafs is:

For the Leafs, winning a championship would not meaningfully increase revenue, but trying to win one would increase costs and risk.

Therefore, the rational economic strategy is:

  • Be competitive
  • Have marketable stars
  • Make the playoffs
  • Sell hope
  • Avoid high-risk “all-in” moves

Championships are emotionally valuable but not economically necessary for a franchise that already prints money.

The Cowboys aren't trying to win championships? Just sounds like Cowboy fan cope/privilege. Don't know if you're a cowboy fan, I just hate this sentiment that the Cowboys are "supposed" to win titles and be great. There is no such thing in the NFL

I’m normally with you man but I think you are underestimating Indiana by a good bit. Have you watched them play? Very disciplined and well coached. Defense is much better than ours. I think they would be a pick ‘em if we played them on a neutral field. Their quarterback is also very good. I wouldn’t pick them to win the natty but I think they can play with anybody. We’ll find out in the playoffs because it’s hard to tell who is really elite with schedules being so unbalanced. I actually think the SEC isn’t near as good this year as they have been but they might prove me wrong in the playoffs.
I've seen them a couple times and I agree they are well coached, experienced. and dangerous team, for sure. I just don't think that they are the super team they are being made out to be. They are good but most of the teams they are beating are not.

Is this good for a DC at Tennessee? Honestly. Because I don’t think it is. It seems like we have to have an elite DL and NFL corners to field a decent defense. Otherwise, it’s not very good.

If you average all of those that is fielding the 62nd best defense in the country.
You really can't use total yards / scoring to judge the efficacy of a defense if you're not adjusting for opponent strength, pace, and field position.

Elite, no. But Banks' defensive have been much better than people give them credit for.

Honestly...if we were closer to the mean with less variance, I think I could tolerate 62nd with normal Heupel offenses. But when your variance is dead last to first back to dead last, clearly something isn't right. And then when you throw a Nico or Joe offense on top of that kind of defense, you have a team that could win the NC one year and go 6-6 the next. Not cool. At least not cool for my heart.

The Cubs did it for a 100 years.

Also... where does that 2023 number come from?

Unadjusted Yards: #33
Unadjusted Scoring: #22
Adjusted Efficiency: #21

That alone would take your average from 62 to 40 or so, and that's without even adjusting for SOS and pace.

International Collect On Delivery (ICOD) Fee For U.S. Deliveries

  • Effective Date: June 2, 2025
  • Details: UPS is imposing an International Collect on Delivery (ICOD) fee of $12 for U.S. deliveries. This new fee will be charged to the U.S. consignee at delivery along with any unpaid duties, taxes, and other fees for the shipment. Consignees can potentially avoid the ICOD fee if they pay the applicable customs charges electronically, prior to delivery, through the UPS International Pre-Payment Application (IPPA).
  • Why It Matters: If the fee isn’t paid, the shipment will not be released, and in some cases, the shipment may be returned to the sender or abandoned.

Is this because Kim was pressured into getting rid of Ruby? This is all the KPD's fault.
Kim said this team would miss Ruby this year, but UT would be better off in the long run. Turns out, she was right on the first part

Eh. There's a point that it goes beyond simply representing your clients well and wanders over into something unhealthy. You can't love what he does in one breath and hate what NIL is doing in another, because they are both extreme examples of greed.
I didn't say I liked it, or him :) ............Just that he's good at his job.
shady as all get out in my opinion......

So your point is building depth to be consistent is a major issue. I agree.

UPS comes to my house pretty much every damn day and they never ask me for money.

I had not thought of that. That would be a really good fit for Alex and Ole Miss. I honestly do not believe Kiffin is leaving. It just makes zero logical sense to me he would do that when Ole Miss is making a playoff run, and Florida is not the same tier of SEC program Ole Miss is AT PRESENT. I'm not sold they could even get there. Look at all these articles about how bad Florida's NIL situation is. This is just what's being said publicly. What are people telling Lane about them behind closed doors?

Doesn't it suggest desperation to start an NIL fundraising campaign before the fans even know who the new coach will be? Sort of like they think they need more NIL dollars to attract a good coach...

His daughter got him to stay at ole miss last year.

Now he is alcohol free, healthy, Knox playing HS ball in Mississippi and LAYLA in the house and his brother down the street.

He is about to become maybe highest paid coach, he is staying IMO.
