Near Knoxville, Norris Dam st pk, Cove Lake St pk, Big Ridge st pk. Most dams have campgrounds as well as campgrounds around the lake. So one of my favorites in the east is Mt. Pisgah off of the Blue Ridge Pkwy.
That block of territory also picks up NW Upstate SC, which is often overlooked yet just as scenic and less travelled. That whole state line run from NW of Clemson up past Spartanburg is a rugged treasure. Especially the Green River areas.Ha, Lots of "different" styles of living in E. TN, Western NC, SW Virginia, N GA. I have a sister near Asheville, and we sometimes take a different route besides I-40 just to see the scenery and interesting towns and structures.
We passed by tha thing many a time in my youth. Going over SM back then was our only passage to Dunlap to pick up 111 into Cookeville. The W Road shortcut up SM was also employed. Then after about 600 years they finally completed the 27/111 connections on the north side of Chatt.Have you seen the flying saucer house on Signal Mtn?
My wife's sister lived near the saucer. She was a teacher/principal at a elementary school in Chattanooga, and drove the W Rd. to/from work. One day she didn't make it in, and the school called us wanting to know if we knew what happened. She had gone off the road on a steep bank on the W Rd., and was killed. That was 1984.We passed by tha thing many a time in my youth. Going over SM back then was our only passage to Dunlap to pick up 111 into Cookeville. The W Road shortcut up SM was also employed. Yep, I left that out, SC. We used to live in Chattanooga and Cleveland. If we went to Myrtle Beach from Cleveland we would go through Clemson. That block of territory also picks up NW Upstate SC, which is often overlooked yet just as scenic and less travelled. That whole state line run from NW of Clemson up past Spartanburg is a rugged treasure. The climb from Dunlap to Cagle is something else. I remember in my College Days going up that final grade in my little 4 speed Ford Fiesta. Would have been almost faster to have gotten out and pushedWe passed by tha thing many a time in my youth. Going over SM back then was our only passage to Dunlap to pick up 111 into Cookeville. lol. Yeah that last hump is straight on. no sidewinding. I had an '89 land cruiser wagon with the bullet proof but incredibly slow huge inline 6. It would do most anything, but it did not like climbing that hill at speed. Was usually slowed down to about 45 tops by the time I got up.The climb from Dunlap to Cagle is something else.
