That’s a great series. I was fortunate to go to their meeting at Stokely Center in the 1983 NCAA tournament. Lancaster Gordon was the hero that day for Louisville in OT.

After they lost in Bloomington in 2011 on the Christian Watford buzzer-beater, he refused to renew the contract as a home-and-home. Next month will be their first regular season meeting since that game.

The sparring between those two coaches in the media leading up to the game was just as entertaining. Crum had tried to schedule them for years but UK refused to play. After that meeting in the NCAAT the state legislature mandated the series, and they’ve played every year since. It’s as intense of an atmosphere as you’ll ever encounter.

It isn't often the Kentucky Louisville basketball game is on the calendar before the Kentucky Louisville football game, those games over in dimly lit, poorly air conditioned Freedom Hall were always a workout when Denny Crum has his roster dialed up and ran up and down the floor with those 6-6 guards that were all built for the NBA.

The only thing comparable would be a Louisville Memphis State Metro Conference Tournament finale in the Big 80s, Lancaster Gordon, Milt Wagner, Bobby Parks and Doom Haynes, NBC coast to coast with Dick Enberg, Billy Packer and Al McGuire on the call, Memphis SWAT team serving as ushers in the Mid South Coliseum.
