⚽️ LADY VOLS SOCCER THREAD

I'm sure it has something to do with geographical reasoning, but I think the #4,5,6,7, and 8 seeds would all rather be playing the team assigned than North Carolina. Tough draw for the #3 seed to be seemingly penalized.
opponents of all #3 seeds: Samford, Utah Valley, Cailfornia Baptist, and North Carolina (haha)

LADY VOLS EARN NO. 3 SEED, HOST NORTH CAROLINA FRIDAY FOR NCAA FIRST ROUND

IMG_5598.jpeg
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — For the 11th time in program history and first time since 2022, Regal Soccer Stadium will serve as a host site for the first round of the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship. Tennessee will open the tournament at home against North Carolina on Friday at 6 p.m., as revealed by the NCAA Selection Show Monday afternoon.

The Lady Vols claimed a No. 3 national seed after compiling a 12-3-3 record this season under fourth-year head coach Joe Kirt. Tennessee has been ranked in the top 25 of the United Soccer Coaches poll every week since Aug. 19 and currently sits No. 9 in the RPI.

Friday's matchup will be Tennessee's 15th meeting with North Carolina and the second matchup between the programs this season. The Lady Vols knocked off the top-ranked Tar Heels, 2-0, in the 2025 season opener on Aug. 14.

North Carolina (12-6, 6-4 ACC) finished seventh in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings this season. The Tar Heels sit No. 25 in the current RPI.

TICKETS: First-round tickets are on sale through AllVols.com or by calling the Tennessee Athletics Ticket Office during regular business hours (Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.) at 865-656-1200. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for youth, students and senior citizens. Group tickets (15 or more) are also available for $10 each by contacting the Ticket Office.

Well, let's make some history and be the only Vol women's soccer team to defeat the Heels twice in one season (I presume).

It’s the TN way, brother. NCAA sure isn’t rewarding the Lady Vols for those non conference wins.

I wonder if the #3 seeding was the NCAA's way of recognizing our early season accomplishments, and the matchup with NC their way of dismissing a team that they feel no longer has the roster to compete at that same high level in the tournament.

Hopefully, those lowered expectations will allow our girls to play loose, all out, and have fun in front of a home crowd.

Strong theory. I was bummed when I saw our first opponent but, like you, am going to hope it somehow works out for the best. I mean, how cool would it be to be the team that ends a perennially legitimate contender's season? I believe our women can do it.

Super confused.
Of all the unseeded teams, North Carolina has the highest RPI.
UNC even has a higher RPI than 8 of the seeded teams.

Makes no sense.

Out of all the 32 first round matchups, #3 Tennessee has the most challenging opponent.
What’s the point of even having seeds?

Disadvantages besides them having the highest RPI of any road team.

The Tar Heels are the premier program in all of NCAA soccer.
They have won 23 of the 43 National Championships and are the reigning champs (2024)

Lady Vols already beat them (The Revenge Factor for UNC)

RPI is to the right of each team.

Congratulations to Coach Joe Kirt in making it to the NCAA Tournament for a perfect fourth time in 4 seasons as the HC of the Lady Vols.
4/4 100%

For context, the prior coach, Brian Pensky made the tournament only one time in his first 5 years as the HC. And in 10 years only made it to the big dance 4 times.
4/10 40%
Brian Pensky has a National Championship more recently

That is exactly what happened! Someone posted congrats to the head coach for a list of team accomplishments. Problem is, a different group of players were on the field when that was achieved (btw only x1 player in that group was injured early on but the team kept winning). Kirt made radical changes in his line up and tactics and thus, rapid team regression showed. The selection committee recognizes this. But here's the good news, the original lineup is still intact and therefore, the original performance can be reproduced. As far as playing North Carolina, who cares. If a team wants to advance through the brackets they're gonna have to face the best. We might as well get it out of the way and make a statement early!

What you think .. Chalk in other 3 brackets and Lady Vols in the other?
I think it will be almost all chalk in the first round.

Out of the 32 matches, 9 potential upsets in the first round. IMO

Ohio State over #8 Georgia
Liberty over #8 Clemson
Northwestern over #8 Alabama
Army over #8 Penn State
South Carolina over #7 Wake Forest
Lipscomb over #6 Mississippi State
Dayton over #6 Xavier
Western Michigan over #4 Wisconsin
North Carolina over #3 Tennessee

Maine has the 7th worst rpi in the tournament and plays a 7 seed? I'm guessing someone from UCF was on the committee. They should have been switched with UNC.
