Ready to see the headline: Heupel signs extension

Any room for a middle ground? Heupel was the hire we needed, he has competently righted the ship, but he is not the dynamic, proactive coach needed for championships (SEC or otherwise). He is bumping up against his ceiling.

In that world (which I believe is the real world) I would be ready for a change in the next few years, OR be happy with Heupel's ceiling of being relevant but not a serious championship contender.

(Standing by for accusations of being a pumper from the negas and ad hominem attacks from the pumpers)
You don't know he's reached his ceiling

Yeah, you definitely have forgotten an awful lot about Tennessee football.

The national media is watching the negaVols and writing articles about our fanbase wanting a new coach. Well-known sportswriters are encouraging Heupel to leave UT because of the delusional fanbase! Even the NYTimes wrote about it. Heupel and his family are hearing this stuff. But it's only 10% of the fanbase. Unfortunately, they're very loud. And that's YOU. You want us to spend another decade in the desert? You long for the Dooley and Pruitt years? You're under the delusion that we're on the same level as Alabama and Ohio State and that we should be winning 11 games every year? GTFOH! Nobody is on that level but OSU and Bama. Definitely not Tennessee. Sure, we've had some good periods, but most of our glory was under Neyland and Fulmer. Everything else? Pretty mediocre. But the past few years have been the best since '04. So please, for the sake of the program...STFU!
Another delusional, arrogant poster that think coach H realistically gives a shat about what’s being said on this board. Every fan base is an emotional rollercoaster. We aren’t special. Get over yourself.

FAFO if you don’t sign him to an extension. I don’t care what happens the rest of this season.

You don’t think the miracle he’s worked since taking over this dumpster fire of a program warrants protecting him in the most remarkable coaching vacancies environment of our lifetime?

I don’t get some of you.
Sign him to an extension if someone starts poking around. His agent isn’t going to secretly sneak him away. It’s in his best interest to work UT against another suitor. And the season still needs to play out. If we finish 1-2 there won’t be anyone looking at him, anyway.

When do we know? And that’s me being serious Bernard. We obviously don’t agree on a lot here but I’d like to hear a thought out take on that side of the argument.

As you know, I think he’s a good coach, just don’t ever see him being great. The discipline yearly is enough for me to think that. How many more years of not truly competing for anything before you think it’s possibly ran its course?

This is yet another part of the cycle when you know your coach is getting fired in a year. The pumpers first complain about fictional people calling for his immediate firing, then they start demanding an extension for a disappointing performance.

“After what he took over and what he’s managed to do, I’d give him a lifetime contract” has been uttered about Dooley, Butch, and Pruitt after failures. Now Heupel is getting similar faux shows of confidence.
Know it was a bit of hyperbole with the lifetime contract, but I would like to keep Heupel around. I love the offense. I find it entertaining. The defense is awful, but I'd rather lose in a shootout than watch these defensive bore fests.

Not competing for anything? I'm not going any further. We obviously have entirely different perspectives based on totally different life experiences with competitive sports

If we fire this coach after all he's accomplished, none of us would recognize anyone they could hire to replace him. Surely White is smarter than that?
Richt had accomplished more and he was replaced by the guy that’s currently the best coach in football. We’d be crazy to expect better than Heupel if Dave Hart was still running the show, but Danny White has seemed pretty competent.

Dude what are you talking about? 11, 9, 10 wins the last 3 seasons… Rewarding failure? Seriously GTFO with that nonsense

If ‘Ignorance’ ever reaches $100 a barrel I want drilling rights on your head.
+100 and took a QB after spring practice. NEGAvols going crazy

Oh for sure. I was just asking Legionairre who he would like to see as the next Tennessee coach since he posted that it’s the beginning of the end for Heupel. I’d like to hear what “hot names” are out there now because Kiffin is the only one that I’m hearing, and he’ll likely be be at Florida or LSU next season.

I don't think CJH reads this board. I think he hears the national media, though, which is encouraging him to go to Penn St. because the fanbase is turning on him. They're seeing it on boards like this.

No the problem is we put to much thought into the 2008-2020 era. That was not TN football. To many people are now just happy that we aren’t that when TN has a rich history that I know you’re aware of. That should be the expectation or the “want” I guess you would say. And I’m well aware it won’t happen over night.

But we aren’t competing for sec titles or nattys. Nowhere close. Shouldn’t we want that? I don’t think wanting that is being “entitled” as the word you like to throw around. You use the playoffs last year as a walking crutch in this argument a lot.

We both know we weren’t truly a playoff caliber team. All one had to do was watch the last game of the season to see that. I think we’ll win 9 this year, with 0 wins to brag about, I suppose depending on who we draw in a bowl. It wasn’t a hard question.

But the fanbase hasn't turned on him…. It’s almost like the media is being the media. Some have said he can do better in areas, and he can. But I don’t think anyone is sticking for sale signs in his yard. I’m sure you have a 1% sonewhere being idiots, as with any fan base. If he leaves, it ain’t cause of the fans.

I will let y’all know when it’s time for a Heupel extension - but it’s not time yet.

I will also let y’all know when it’s time to consider firing him - but it’s really not time for that yet.

I know things. For example, milk from brown cows doesn’t come out of the utter flavored chocolate.

Sarcasm intended.

I try to erase the 2002-2020 stint from my brain. Every game in the SEC has playoff implications and the last thing I am worried about is having a win to brag about. Like I said, we have different life experiences as to sports' competition which mold the differing perspectives

I wonder how many of the LOM are gamblers. I ask because most gamblers I know are some of the most miserable people I have ever been around. Also because I suspect that some have lost some pretty large amounts trying to out wit Vegas. But as the Duke would say "life is hard. It's even harder when you're stupid". Now, instead of accepting their responsibility for being stupid, they want to fire the coach instead.

And you know what Ron White says. That applies to the LOM as well.

The only names I’ve ever seen proposed by that crowd are Kiffin and Golesh, lol. They are never able to make an actual list, and either go with those two or just say “I don’t know, it isn’t my job!”…. Perhaps the most pathetic cop out imaginable.

Kiffin, the jury is still out on whether he even is better than Heupel. As of right now, he hasn’t reached the CFP yet, and if he does get there this season, he could very well lose his game as badly as Heupel lost to OSU. So there’s zero reason to think he’d do substantially better as of right now, and that’s not even getting into the fact that he’ll probably be at a better job by this time next year.

Golesh, believe me, I’m one of his biggest fans-but firing Heupel for him would be idiotic. I’m not even going to humor it lol.
