The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

Hey guys, gonna try and be more around the basketball forum this year. Some of you might know me and @005 have done a podcast in the past and we restarted it this year. This was our basketball preview and we plan on doing basketball talk once a week after football season. I won’t post every episode we do, don’t want to inundate the board with podcast links. I know there are not many Vol basketball podcast previews, I thought you guys might enjoy.

Dope. You should just post every time with with a highlight of what you discuss. Maybe even timestamped.

Is this on Spotify?

Yessir. Just search Power-T Talk. Timestamped segments on Spotify, as well (sometimes they get slightly off as we transition, but a mostly accurate guide).

My son is so excited for college bball to be back - and I'm not sure he even knows what a Nate Ament is yet.

Appreciate the compliment. We are also on Apple Podcasts as well, plus a couple other ones. We have been doing football every week, but with basketball upcoming, we wanted to get a preview pod going. With 9 newcomers, I needed to see the Duke exhibition and the Mercer game before I truly felt comfortable with previewing the roster.

Puff Johnson…
So. That puts dude on two all name watch lists…
Puff better make sure he isn't living up to his namesake. Never know when there might be a surprise drug raid...

This is why Diddy changed his name I heard. Way less likely to draw interest. Seems to have worked well...

I rewatched all the offensive possessions in the first half of the game last night 2-3 times each.

Brown was our best performing offensive player in that half and it wasn’t close.

He had multiple screen assists. And 2 of them were spectacular. He had regular assists with the big to big passing. Cuts off screens to score…

Offensively, he played winning basketball. The things you gotta have that maybe don’t get noticed as much or appear on the stat sheet.

I was blown away.

It’s just one half of basketball, but I’m now the conductor of the hype train

Second half, his minutes largely co-incided with the series of early clock turnovers. About the only time he got into the offense the entire 2nd half, he scored a bucket.

Other insights are that Gillespie played out of control. I’d give him an F for that game. Burg was much more in control and steady at the PG position.

Ament has a lot to clean up about his game. In this game alone he got his pocket picked multiple times, lost his handle, blew a bunny at the rim, and shot 1-4 from 3. The potential is apparent but he isn’t gonna come close the achieving it this year IMO, which should go without saying.

In the two games we’ve seen, the best players (speaking strictly offensively) have been Brown, Estrella, Burg and Ament.

I’ve suggested Burg as the PG and Gillespie as the SG. I still feel that might be best.

Ultimately, my big overreaction is to maybe temper some expectations. We have further to go than I expected. But it’s early so let’s see how the next few play out.

I’ve had and shared similar thoughts about Gillespie off the ball some with Burg or Henderson at PG, to me both of those guys look like they could be good there and that would help solve some of theb2 guard issues we’ve discussed. Also wouldn’t hate Ament at the 4 against smaller teams, I get he doesn’t have the physicality to do it against most SEC teams, but these MM’s are smaller and a smaller guy guarding him is annoying when they get up under you, Barnes has discussed this about Durant before. Not sure we see it as the staff seems dead set on him playing solely the 3, but against those smaller teams I definitely think you could run him at the 4 and he’d be fine.

Also agree and have echoed the thoughts about this team having a ways to go, that’s exciting to me because I don’t think Barnes has had a team more clearly obvious that they aren’t near their potential than this one. Now obviously you have to get there, but to me that’s also why I’m not freaking out about these early games, I think the staff sees this first month as essentially 5 more exhibition games for them to tinker with lineups and figure things out, I think they realize they aren’t anywhere close to a finished product.

I really appreciate the last three posts (2 from omg and 1 from bto). This is what I come to this forum for!

This does mesh with a lot of what I was thinking, along with what sounds like a great idea of moving Gillespie to the 2 position. I have missed most of the good play from Brown, but you guys have got me thinking future all-american! Like a baby Shak, with hopefully better free throw shooting... Maybe that is not a good analogy. Like I said, I really haven't seen much of his best work.

I’m on mobile or else I’d time stamp the link here

But go to the 12:12 in the first half (game time not video time) and watch brown recognize and screen assist for Estrella to get a wide open look

Then go to about 10:21 and watch him screen two players to get Gillespie an open 3

It’s that kinda stuff

Taking all phases seriously!

That has me pumped! Definitely winning basketball, even if it doesn't show in the stats.

The problem with playing ament at the 4 is that we already have a lot of good options at the 4 and moving him down there, while it would probably give him a good matchup, would require us to play a weaker guard who might not win their matchup. Maybe it could work if we paired it with both Abram and Boswell so that we remain stout defensively and just play through that ament matchup on offense, but it feels like playing their game instead of leaning into our size advantage and imposing our will.

Absolutely terrific performance today, except for the 12-minute mark in the 2nd half, where we lost the mojo for about 5 minutes. Boswell looked really good. Found out Brown is a mere human after all. Ament is just smooth, and JP was spectacular. This team has such a high upside, and it looks like Carey might be behind in this post race, although still very early.
