Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

You know those recurring dreams that we all have? I've actually found others have some of the same ones - like you are in serious trouble because it's way past the drop date, you haven't been to class, and you realize that's caught up and you have no clue when or where the class is. One of mine is dialing an old rotary phone and my finger slips, so I have to start all over again, and the problem continues to repeat - just couldn't have low digits to work with either. Doesn't happen much anymore, but there's that sense of urgency/frustration and the fingers won't cooperate - like the legs when trying to run from snakes.
Have had that dream

IRL high school was a breeze for me, while I barely graduated college.

yet, my reoccuring school "nightmares" involve having to repeat high school, not college. like 36 y.o. Louder has to show to HS and share a locker with some dweeb while also working a full time job.

Same for me with respect to HS and college. In fact I quit college in my Jr year and enlisted in the Army because I realized I wasn't doing anyone any favors by bumping along. My biggest problem in college generally had to do with profs who couldn't for the life of them make the subject relate to anything meaningful - especially the math courses. Even in grad school, I struggled to put some of that together (nuclear reactor theory is always expressed in higher level calculus), but after graduation while analyzing issues in nuclear plants a lot of it started really coming together - stuff like differential equations and Fourier transforms in particular. I absolutely believe that no engineering student should be subjected to learning higher level math from university math departments. You need to know how a tool works (how, why, and when to use it) rather than studying the tool as a work of art, and math departments are full of the clueless when it comes to application.

I hated college.

I don't have any "panic, urgent, frustration" dreams about my things from my past AFAIK. Ive had dreams my family is in danger though.

Need some advice from our resident electronics experts (ND40 try to keep under 10 letters per word and less than 150 words total).

I can fit an 83" TV on the fireplace in the new house and from my research it looks like OLED is the way to go so what's the best OLED TV and what features should I be looking for?

I tried the military option, but it was during one of Obama's hiring freezes, so no luck. I probably never would have medically qualified anyway.

Leave your Zenith console on the floor just as God intended TVs to be.

Mine was in 1967 during the Vietnam war - they took almost anybody. Later while taking a physical for OCS, a doc commented on my vision and said "You know they couldn't have drafted you."

There are so many types, it blows my mind..the old days when if you needed a tv, you just went with a brand, always Sony, and size. I think my last 36 crt weighed like 400 lbs.

edit..looked it up.,215 lbs, so I was way off, but still heavy.

We've bought plenty of Samsung TVs over the years - the wife seems to think a TV in every room is essential. After working with an LG that we inherited from the wife's father, I think I'm sold on LG. Maybe because our 75" Samsung settings seem to change randomly. Sometimes you turn it on and colors are just way oversaturated and another time they go way bland; sometimes they stay set for weeks. I've been through settings and turned off things like adaptive brightness, and nothing works consistently.

I'm really of the opinion that there are problems with the automated soldering that goes into all electronics these days. A lot you can't fix because of the current compact circuitry, but I've been amazed at the number of times I cured things by working over some sketchy looking solder joints. The worst was my Chamberlain garage door opener - the lead to the lights never got soldered correctly - the high resistance actually caused heat damage to the board. There are three Cuisinart toaster ovens in the family, and not one of them has reliable controls; I worked on one son's oven and made it better - just not much quality in anything made these days. There's a Trane module with a relay to turn the blower on and off; I've had to replace it multiple times in the Trane heat pump here and in Chattanooga. The cause is simple - a resistor that overheats and actually damages the circuit board and solder joint. I'll probably get around to rebuilding some of the removed boards one day (for backups), but the coating over the solder joints is a big problem in doing that.

I've had recurring dreams all my life. Heck, I dream seemingly all night, every night...at least it seems that way. It's like going to the movies every time I lay my head down. I dream of songs I've never heard before. Every instrument sounds perfect, great hooks....I've used some of that in some of the songs I have written actually.

As far as recurring: 1) Someone is trying to hurt me or worse, I have a gun, but the trigger is too damn hard to pull, or the bullet comes out too slowly to stop the perp. 2) Being chased by Feds for no reason or by gangs. 3) Being able to flap my arms and fly away. 4) Being back at an old job.

I don't think for a minute that we really have a championship team this year, but have you really thought about the resume that the bigwhatever teams at the top have? IN has played OR and IL (for what that's worth). OR lost to IN, and the only other "ranked" team on the agenda was PN St which due to bigwhatever bias started way overranked. Toss U got by TX in the first game and has only played PN St; TX was never what the prognosticators thought preseason. Bigwhatever teams at the top play nobodies in and out of the conference all year. Toss U might actually be good, but they rarely risk losing during the season which isn't t all like SEC play. The real kicker is that they have goaded the SEC into upping the end game of Russian roulette by adding another conference game.

To be honest about the TX resume, got a feeling that Sark is a pretender like Jimbo, Kelley, and several other "top" coaches, and given time it will show. TX is likely an upper tier team right now because of the fertile recruiting grounds.

Good post

If you go look at OSU PSU ORE and Mich schedules for 26 and 27 NONE of them play more than 2 teams that should be ranked...and they almost never play eachother in the regular season either. Those teams are set up to go 10-2 or better if they just beat the unranked opponents. Note that unranked big10 teams have rosters that are made up of 3star kids that didnt get offers from the good schools and kids that would be walk ons at best....and 4 year recruiting averages ranked 30th to 80th. Even the unranked SEC teams like Arkansas, Flarda, Barn, USCjr etc average top20ish recruiting classes and would go 9-3 in the Big10. Barn and UF last 4 classes are ranked 10th to 15th on average IIRC. These unranked SEC teams have rosters slam full of 4* players. Flarda has several 5* WRs alone last I checked. There are about a dozen schools in the BIG10 that would struggle to win a single SEC conference game.

Going to 9 SEC games was so stupid. Cut our own throats pertaining to the playoffs...and making the playoffs are all that really matters. We never should have gone to 9 games until the playoffs are 16 teams. There needs to be at least 4 SEC teams in the playoffs every year. The recruiting/talent disparity between the 2 conferences is humiliating for the Big10 which is why you never hear about it on national TV etc. Our VOLS have the 8th ranked class for 2026. Ahead of both the buckeyes and michigan. There are STILL 4 SEC teams above us in the top 7...so that 5 out of the top 8 classes are SEC schools. THAT is why at least 4 SEC teams should be in the playoffs every year. Our rosters are much faster, bigger, and better than Big10 schools except for OSU and ORE. Strangely USC which is now in the Big10 has the #1 class for 2026 though. If they keep that up then they will build rosters like OSU and ORE which actually are as deep as the best SEC schools.

I had a 36in Magnavox/Phillips (made in TN) tube TV when i was 18 to 25 or so and moved a lot. It weighed over 200lbs for sure and I always had to carry it by myself...up and down stairs repeatedly. My chest o drawers in my bedroom was about 5 feet tall also. So when getting it to my bedroom, i had to grab that heavy bastard and powerclean it every time...and still set it down gently up chin high as not to break it. Never hated a piece of electronics so badly in all my life. It cost me almost $1000 after taxes new...and when I finally got rid of it, i carried it downstairs to the front porch and tossed it into the front yard. From there I rolled it to the street like a boulder and left it on the curb for the trashman to herniate a disc on it the way I had a dozen times by then. I wasnt gonna carry that stupid thing 1 more foot than I had to. It still had a good picture and worked fine until i threw it in the yard. TVs today are made out of clouds and Blackmagic. They weigh almost nothing.

Yep. Built a few Heathkit TVs and amps years ago, too. The Hawk missile system radars the Army used in the 60s and 70s were basically all tubes with a very few solid state devices - mostly diodes. I actually preferred working with tubes rather than transistors.
Where can you get tubes these days? Russia would seem difficult. Serbia or Croatia?
