All Time Lady Vols Team...

Sorry nobody has responded with choices yet, but it's kinda not surprising considering we lost last night and now many here are wondering what point there is in even going on with life at all.

😉
Sorry, not sorry. It’s the general reaction most have when someone wanders in from the football forum to start a random thread in a moment of mourning.

Random threads. They consider it an artform…

PG: Kellie Harper/Shannon Bobbitt
SG: Alexis Hornbuckle/Semeka Randall
SF: Tamika Catchings/Chamique Holdsclaw
PF: Candace Parker/Glory Johnson
C: Mercedes Russell/Daedra Charles
Hard to argue with this list, but a few thoughts:

I thought maybe Dena Head should be above Hornbuckle/Randall, but I forgot that in addition to her two championships, Hornbuckle is the program's all-time steals leader, is 3rd in assists, and 5th in win shares. Randall was an electric player early in her career but I felt like she did fade a little towards the end. You could make an argument for Kara Lawson: tied 5th all-time in assists and 2nd in 3s, 6th in points, won four consecutive SEC championships, went to three final fours, and won an Olympic gold.

I kind of forget how good Glory Johnson was. 1st all-time in FT attempts, 2nd all-time in rebounds, 3rd in win shares, 5th in PER - but hard to leave Bridgette Gordon off here as a 2-time NCAA champion (including MOP in 1989), 2nd leading scorer, 2nd in steals, and 10th in rebounds. Glory unfortunately never made a final four and won 2 SEC championships.

I feel like Russell is seen as a disappointment as a former #1 recruit, but she's 2nd in career FG%, 3rd in rebounds, 6th in blocks, 7th in win shares, and 9th in PER. Sheila Frost was before my time, but I think she has to be on here winning 2 national championships, 1st in career FG%, 3rd in blocks, 4th in rebounds, and 10th in points.

Great post, Gordon was the hardest for me to leave off. We’ve had so many good players at that position over the years. She was just a bit before my time, I didn’t get to watch her. I came of age in the Candace Parker era.

I also forget about Shelia for the same reason. Outstanding player in her time. Probably a better pick than Russell. I was actually surprised it was hard to think of a really good center for the Lady Vols. We have historically been a team dominated by versatile forwards. This Caldwell team actually looks a lot more like classic Lady Vol teams.

Merceds and Glory both suffered from Point Guard problems.

Glory was that 08-12 stretch where we had a different Pg every year and it just really wasn’t working. Shekinna Stricklen even played a lot of point and it was definitely not natural even though she was reasonably effective there with her great passing ability.

Mercedes had Simmons and Williams for a season and they played too fast for her at that point. Then she had Jordan Reynolds, steady player but just didn’t push the issue enough. I have visions of her dribbling the ball, waving her other hand around wildly directing traffic for no reason, to throw a pass to the second row. Then there was Tea Cooper and that caused all sorts of team wide drama that significantly affected the play that season. Deshields played some point in all of that too and we know exactly how well she shared the ball lol.

Give me players that know how to win championships. I will pass on the rest. Also it's laughable to think no one before 1997/98 would make the list.

Also, I'm putting speedy on my list just because she was coached by a dumpster fire most of her career.

1. Kellie Harper, Holly Warlick
2. Alexis Hornbuckle, Tamika Catchings
3. Candice Parker, Bridgette Gordon
4. Chamique Holdsclaw, Glory Johnson
5. Daeda Charles, Trish Roberts

Great list. I find Catchings, Parker and Holdsclaw are all so versatile it’s hard to categorize their position. All three could play 1-5 if called upon.

Nah, I'll pass. Too much living in the past been going on up in here for too long.

A lot of times you can tell where a program is in current day based on the number of "greatest" lists the fans do. When there is a lot of current or recent success they are too busy and upbeat to think about "remember whens".

Btw, I think we are in great shape with Caldwell.
