Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

I think a lot of people are going learn a lesson with LSU and FU and a lot of coaches are going to get raises. You are right, not only do you have to make the right hire you are going pay a massive buyout. Freeze might be different story, I really think he was checked out and negligent.
I am really excited to watch FU, they have pretty much struck out with every hire since Urban. This time it could be fatal.
Freeze checked out right after $ankey and $EC REFS screwed him out of 2 wins so early in season and you could look at his face and tell he knew it was over.

Get those 2 wins and I believe the rest of his year would be different and he would still be making calls from the barn on his burner phone.

And that's probably the way it will play out. The middle 1/3 of the SEC will battle for the at large bids. I think those are the 8,9 win teams. I would think the VOLS should be in the top 1/3 but I don't see it.

There are 16 teams in the SEC and four - Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma and Georgia - all have more wins all-time than Tennessee. LSU, Auburn, A&M and Florida are not terribly far behind and arguably have been more consistently good in recent decades than Tennessee.

When I put Tennessee in the context of the modern SEC - middle third seems about right. That’s not a knock on Tennessee, it’s a testament to how ridiculously strong the SEC is.

I’m not saying Tennessee can never win it all, I’m just saying my baseline is middle tier because that is reality.

At least a couple of these teams will lose their first round game in CFP. Same as Vols last season.

By those metrics, were Vols elite last year? And wouldn’t that already mean that Heup has cleared the step from great to elite?

This is a fun convo to talk about bc it is so subjective.

Agree on how those squads look so far this year.
That’s an interesting question, I would lean yes because of sampson and our defense, but I would think those teams mentioned earlier would probably beat us if it were this years team (indiana, oregon, etc) vs our team last year just because of how inconsistent our passing game was

Midwest is simply better at drinking at beer
Despite our love for football and getting rowdy while watching football, there are too many teetotalers and neo-prohibitionists in the South to dominate a list like that. There was a decent contingent of people on this site who were horrified when Neyland starting selling beer.

Drinking culture is different in the Midwest as you said, especially the Upper Midwest. The amounts of beer that people from Wisconsin and Minnesota can drink is astonishing, probably right up there with the Brits.

Anyone else think Josh seemed mad in his presser today? I liked it. Made me think he wants to drop 100 on FL and Vandy if he can and win out. I don’t think he likes being questioned or fans questioning him. I liked the attitude how he answered some questions today.

22 and 2 said nuh-uh. Both of those guys will be chasing receivers over the middle during the bye week.

Yep, and what really sucks...the AD that fired Fulmer and hired Kiffin (can't remember who was there at that time) actually got the hire right.

Now Kiffin might have gotten us on probation with more baggage than Pruitt left us with...who knows. But Lane is capable of winning at a high level. Sucks he didn't appreciate the brand as much as he should have and bailed for USC at the worst possible time both for TN and for himself. Really surprised he didn't see the writing on the wall in that situation, they just wanted a scapegoat HC until things blew over and fired him as soon as they could.
It is almost like Kiffin led Tennessee to NCAA trouble, then bolted to USC to avoid accountability, but was surprised when accountability followed him to USC. I do believe sincerely that he learned a valuable lesson from that, and I believe in everyone's ability to grow. He has said he would have done it differently if he had it to do again. Another reason I bet he stays at Ole Miss.

I guess that's what we should strive for.

I would add Michigan as well. Many trips to Grand Rapids where Beer is the preferred choice for breakfast..

I understand both sides of the spectrum. One crowd is saying "we've seen the 9 and 10 win seasons for the last 3 or 4 years. What's the next step to achieve more".

The other crowd is saying " we're good with 9 or 10 wins per year, because it's brings stability to the sport that we haven't had in 15 years".

It's whatever you prefer... I'm from the AL Davis era, " just win baby"..
I can agree with this, I think both sides have valid points

Listening to sports radio now and I've heard two callers call for his head in the last 10 minutes
I was referring to people in this thread....... Because all day not one individual has
Posted "CJH needs to be fired". But as @InVOLuntary stated if people don't have the same opinion as the Majority then , oh hell you're a NegaVol.. but on any given Saturday the ones calling people NegaVols are the same ones bitching about play calling and coaching staff...

Oh absolutely. You hit the nail on the head. I think Heupel has built it up, incredibly so. The question is, can he take another step? I think most fall into 3 categories.

1. They are satisfied with being in that 8,9, occasional 10 win territory. They don't expect any different.

2. They are satisfied with the current results but expect more long term. They think he needs more time. (I sort of fall into this category but my confidence that it will get better is taking a hit)

3. A few think that he's had enough time and if he doesn't improve then he needs to go. That time allotment us 1-2 years.

Of course there are the loons thar want him gone now (very few).
I think 2 is the best answer. Can Heupel be the guy? Absolutely, he himself has given us no real reason not to think so. Are there things he can tweak to get us there? Absolutely.

The main thing is to see constant improvement. If we hit a plateau and things dont really improve or we never take that next step (within 3 years imo) then sure it’s time to talk about heup’s seat legitly. But until then I think he’s fine

Yikes.

So if we spend top three on NIL, recruiting, and coaching, we should expect middle tier or middle third because our overall record is below four teams? And two of those played in a weaker conference to boost their W/L?

If we spend 35mil next year on a roster and the fourth best team spent 28mil, we should be grateful to be middle of the road?

Very interesting….

I think we need to adjust our thought process as we are NFL Lite and $$$ rules all.

LSU's new president appears to backtrack somewhat on making the guy announced as permanent AD yesterday, permanent. Every singe new story like this out of LSU makes that job less appealing.

Heup certainly doesn't need to go, but he needs to upgrade certain position groups with the staff... No one including himself can deny that after what we've seen this season. That's taking the hard step from good to great. Also he needs to self-reflect where he's fallen short as a coach and be willing to improve...Crazy, I said this same thing after the playoff and think there were two pages of responses blasting me, yet here we are...

No excuses to go get who we need in the portal to fill specific positions of need... There is, and will be, plenty to choose from... they've done a good job identifying talent, but have also missed on a few...

Kids like Oregon CB Dakoda Fields (top 125 recruit in 2024 with 3yrs) will be in the portal --- He's the type that should be our first call, how much will it take, okay fine, then get your bags and ass to Knoxville...

No more back and forth and shopping the bargain isle with how important the portal has become and what you can see in terms of help and results.

This is the area where fans have a right to be upset if we whiff again... Don't charge us more for peanuts/beer/swag to tickets every season and then say we don't have enough funds to get who we want. Weren't we second in revenue this past year? That's the one argument fans don't want to hear moving forward.

Hopefully we don't roll over the remainder of the season, this will be a big indicator of where the chemistry of this team is and how our coaching staff can manage it... will be very telling... We can see when the kids are out there giving it everything they've got, and we can also tell when they are "Booing" it... That should be our new Moran, thanks Jimmy, or Porthole... "Booing" it means half assin it, not caring, going through the motions. Your welcome.
