Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

TN has had 21 10 win seasons in the entirety of the program existing.

121 seasons, and only 21 did they finish with 10 wins.

8 by Fulmer & 5 by Neyland

Heupel has done it twice already in 4 complete years here. So I absolutely am fine with leaving him damn well alone and seeing what happens the next 3-5 years.
History has nothing to do with the future with NIL. The game has changed with NIL. And it actually benefits UT. We have money and we have excellent leadership. It’s our coach’s job to use those funds to load up a roster (I think he finally is with blue chips now) and hire top notch coaches to develop our players (likely needs a few tweaks). I truly believe this is our window for a title before they limit NIL and other changes to the landscape. Those who have the $$$ and are willing to spend it will win.

Drinkowitz is an absolute douche and dork, but he's put together some pretty dang solid teams at Mizzou and recruited pretty well. I've been reluctantly impressed.

I think he's at the perfect spot for him. He's made for a school like Mizzou.

Honestly they had a good year in 23 but if they miss the playoffs this year, they’ve underachieved two years in a row with that schedule.

That's the whole problem. Any discussion other than unicorn rainbows is considered feeding the negative sentiment. I appreciate your propping me up as having any influence whatsoever. And , I never said he had to win a national championship. That's hogwash. What I would like is for him to beat a ranked team. He hasn't in his last 5 attempts. I'm sorry I've disappointed you but don't serve me chicken shat and tell.me it's chicken soup.
I’m going to leave it be Invol. We all wish this year was better and can see he missed some opportunities. Some his fault and some his players fault. That’s football at a highly competitive level. I take the stance of supporting him for as long as he’s our coach. He’s done way more good than bad and that’s good enough for me. The odds he wins a championship are remote. The odds of winning a championship after firing him are even more remote. Been proven over and over. I want stability and think it will lead to more sustained success. By many of the people on this board we should fire Rick Barnes for not winning a championship. Not you. I’m good and will quit telling you how to be a fan. It’s just tiresome and ultimately doesn’t make the situation better in my opinion. Peace. ☮️

I don’t blame Nebraska either, nor do I blame Tennessee for firing Fulmer. It’s less that the firing decision was WRONG in and of itself and more that it’s literally always a roll of the dice when you’re trying to go from good to great. My general sense is that it works less often than it doesn’t.
Mike Hamilton firing CPF and hiring that punk Kiffin was the cause of our 15 years of misery. Both Fulmer and Richt got screwed, Kirby won with Richt's players and Fulmer should have been allowed to leave on his terns and not in the publicly humiliating way that it was done by that punk Hamilton.
The talk at the time was that "The ceiling is 10 wins with Fulmer," just like now. People are stupid and they keep making the same stupid mistakes.

In today’s landscape, you should expect a 9-3 or 10-2 season and hopefully strike gold in the portal and other teams don’t…. then boom, magic could happen.

I do not consider Tennessee a top 4 SEC team anymore. There’s going to be so much change over the next decade though.

Friggin Vandy is on the cusp of playoffs.
Pre NIL I would agree.

Post NiL - we are top four with $$$ and leadership.

We all have different expectations and ideals as to what Tennessee football should be and that's ok. I support him as well. I hope he does well, it's in the best interest of UT football that he does. Like I said, it's just a confidence thing for me. I've also said he has a chance to gain that confidence back by taking care of business the rest of the way. All are winnable games. You are a great poster here. I suspect I'm a little longer in the tooth. I think that may be part of the difference.

And where did I compare the two?

He stated he would be happy with Richt and winning 8-9 games a year.

I stated that they fired Richt for that because he didn’t win championships. And now they have won two championships under Kirby. Kirby is better than Richt.

Conversation never was about what Heupel inherited or the past here. And Heupel turned it around way quicker than any thought here. But the truth is this is year five and this is his full roster now. He could have taken more in the portal and he and his staff chose not to. Everyone wants him to be successful and become elite. That likely includes some changes on staff. I think everyone wants him to be successful and become elite.
Sorry I misunderstood.

I disagree man. Nebraska was elite and was coming off a national title. Once Crouch graduated, the program was headed in a downward spiral.

Using his record as justification is like saying Coker shouldn't have been fired at Miami because he was 60-15.
The only reason Larry Coker won a National Championship at Miami was because Butch Davis took the Cleveland Browns job after bringing Miami back to the top of the heap after getting hit hard by NCAA sanctions...Coker was handed a gold mine..

Oh absolutely. You hit the nail on the head. I think Heupel has built it up, incredibly so. The question is, can he take another step? I think most fall into 3 categories.

1. They are satisfied with being in that 8,9, occasional 10 win territory. They don't expect any different.

2. They are satisfied with the current results but expect more long term. They think he needs more time. (I sort of fall into this category but my confidence that it will get better is taking a hit)

3. A few think that he's had enough time and if he doesn't improve then he needs to go. That time allotment us 1-2 years.

Of course there are the loons thar want him gone now (very few).

I’m in #2 but disappointed with how he managed this season. Our schedule was easy relative to other SEC schools. Folks were predicting 8 or 9 wins based on average QB play but Joey exceeded those expectations and we still didn’t capitalize. The opportunity was there and as it looks we may have more losses on the horizon.

Exactly. History is crap as a predictor of the future when the rules have changed as dramatically as they have.

The past history of UT's seasonal performance is also crap as a predictor when the university, donors and fans have stepped up to take advantage of the changes as they have.

Accepting less than excellence is a loser mentality. The time is now.

NIL has caused the costs associated with running a winning program to skyrocket and you could easily get donor fatigue if you screw up a hire just because of the sheer amount of money you'd have to raise to buyout the last guy, pay for the new guy, and then buyout that guy when he doesn't work out. You're absolutely right that the grass isn't always greener...less so now with NIL. A lot of programs would love to be in our position with Heupel. The commitment from the AD and donors is there and we see the recruiting trending up each year. This program isn't far at all from taking that last step.

I kind of wish they would hire a guy like Cutcliffe to have some oversight and advise Heupel on how to adjust what they do in practice in order to tighten up the on field discipline. Cut was good at that and we desperately need it. I think Jerry Kill has done something similar for Vanderbilt.
I think a lot of people are going learn a lesson with LSU and FU and a lot of coaches are going to get raises. You are right, not only do you have to make the right hire you are going pay a massive buyout. Freeze might be different story, I really think he was checked out and was negligent.
I am really excited to watch FU, they have pretty much struck out with every hire since Urban. This time it could be fatal.

Anyone else think Josh seemed mad in his presser today? I liked it. Made me think he wants to drop 100 on FL and Vandy if he can and win out. I don’t think he likes being questioned or fans questioning him. I liked the attitude how he answered some questions today.
Looks like we all need to be more vocal about questioning him

I thought that said Dyron Nix  ..........RIP legend.

Man, when I read your post it floored me.
If I knew of Dyron's passing I had forgotten, so it was like hearing it for the first time.
I had the privilege of seeing him play at Stokely a couple of times.
The dude had pogo sticks in his legs. I once saw him flush a jam off a rebound that still to this day I can't describe with my limited vocabulary.
RIP, Dyron

Yep, and what really sucks...the AD that fired Fulmer and hired Kiffin (can't remember who was there at that time) actually got the hire right.

Now Kiffin might have gotten us on probation with more baggage than Pruitt left us with...who knows. But Lane is capable of winning at a high level. Sucks he didn't appreciate the brand as much as he should have and bailed for USC at the worst possible time both for TN and for himself. Really surprised he didn't see the writing on the wall in that situation, they just wanted a scapegoat HC until things blew over and fired him as soon as they could.
I gotta disagree on this one MoCo. When Kiffin was hired I was hired (I realize it was mostly because of Monte) I was like WTF are we doing. We are Tennessee and we are hiring Urban Myers brally love child.
