Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

I find it kind of ironic that AP and other beat writers have more or less stated that the staff wishes they got Nico more reps in 2023 so he would have more experience for 2024, yet here we are with Merk essentially being one foot out the door and we have him as qb2 and have only played GMac in one game…
Huh. I was not aware that they had that regret about Nico in 23. Knowing what we know now about Nico i don't think it would've mattered so I wonder if they would still feel that way

I’m not.

Maybe that’s our currently reality as a top 15 program, but I still consider the both the standard and the goal to be convincingly top 10 and competing for conference and national championships. Don’t let our recent worst period in program history fool you into thinking we’re not capable of that. We have the number 2 sec athletic department from a revenue perspective and a top 5 national NIL program. Thats a top 10 program whether the performance reflects it yet or not.

With 12 teams getting in, 3-5 being sec (soon to be 4-6 with expansion to 16), I’m disappointed if we don’t make it. I expect at this point to think we should make it every year and maybe more realistically make it at least every other year. Thats the bar. Thats where I’m at.

I want to win a championship. We’re overdue. We’re not doing that averaging 9 wins and making the playoffs every 2-3 years.
It's not going to be that difficult to make the playoffs most years. It's akin to making the NCAABB tournament.

Happy Tuesday

November 4, 2025: Be still. Rein in those thoughts that will take you off course creating a sense of panic. Take stock of where you are and what you need to do right here and right now, and access the truth of your situation. Settle yourself in the presence of the Holy Spirit and be still in order to receive direction. John 8:31-32 If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

It’s 4 hours because of TV though. Not because of all the “concert” type stuff. That stuff is just there to fill in the gaps for every TV timeout. I don’t like it just like others have said. Basketball games have the same problem. You don’t need every second to be filled with entertainment. Sometimes less is more.

MLB too. I was at a Braves game in August and it’s an assault on the senses. Unless someone is at bat there’s constant music, announcements, commercials, etc. You can’t speak to the person next to you without shouting to be heard.

Merk just didn't look to be a fit with this offense, with that said GMac did but needs experience. He should be your QB 2

Heather Dinich, whom is spot on usually with her CFP playoffs team predictions has :

4 SEC teams , Alabama, Georgia,Texas A&M and Mississippi
3 Big 10 teams, Indiana, Ohio State and Oregon
2 Big 12 teams , BYU and Texas Tech
1 ACC team. Virginia
Group of 5, Memphis
Notre Dame...

In her first brack coming out tonight...

You're correct but as a 5* recruit, Ament should've dominated the floor vs Mercer and their team full of 3* recruits...

Actually Gillespie should've had a better game but this team is still meshing( so I've been told) ... Estrella is the key to the season imo...

He didn’t dominate the court like a lottery caliber player should have against Mercer…that was my point. He just looked like a guy tonight. I had higher expectations given the praise I had heard.
He looks young out there to me. Boozer looked like a man, in my opinion he hasn't learned to maximize his game yet. He needs more confidence and situation experience at this level. He should be just fine.

Need all those teams to lose
Need chaos to make the committee have to make bad decisions and look dumb so the playoff can get fixed

Need to go the FCS route

I think casual fans are gonna have too high of an expectation on him because of his NBA potential. College game and NBA game are totally different, watching Nate I can see why the NBA can't wait to get him...in isolation 1 on 1 he is going to be a nightmare for defenders.

College the ball is always the focus and you get way more crowds around you.

54.5% FG on only 11 shots for 18 points, 9 rebounds in the opener with a game that Rick played 11 guys 12+ minutes is really good. Unlike Chaz or DK Nate isn't going to have to be the primary scorer on this team. I'd like to see him do a better job of finding his teammates though, cause he's going to draw lots of doubles and if he can get his assists into that 4-5 a game range taking advantage he'll make himself even more difficult to handle.

I'd prefer Georgia Tech to beat Georgia and knock out Notre Dame. BYU and Texas Tech play this weekend and if Tech loses I don't think Big12 gets two teams in unless BYU finished undefeated regular season and drops the Big 12 championship game to Utah, Texas Tech or Cincy

Is it wrong to think the expectation should be to make the playoffs every year? I'm not saying you fire a coach for missing it one year, like we'll miss it this year. But if Heupel were to miss the playoffs 3-4 straight years in a row, would that not be a sign it was time to move on? I know every year isn't realistic, but making it once every three years, that should be realistic, IMO. I mean, schools like Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Ohio State... Those schools' fanbases have the expectations of making it every year. So it's not like I'm putting us on an unreachable pedestal. Making it one out of three years seems like a fair expectation. We made it last year. We missed it this year. Should we miss it another couple of years, then yeah, I think Heupel should be on the hotseat. But that's not now. Now is hoping they come back next year, stronger and tougher and ready to kick ass. But the expectation every year, IMO, should be make the playoffs.
Do you realize the obstacles this team has overcome in the last year? Look back to January, how many people thought we would have an possibility of making the playoffs aside from the Red Sea parting? As a fan one should be outrageously optimistic yet grounded in reality. In truth we are a field goal, a pick six, and a missed call away from a miracle year. In 1998 those miracles happened that, is the difference. We had a better team in 1997 and still didn't get it done. It's not personal, it's football.

Some other things to keep in mind...

Dalton Knecht didn't "arrive" really until he dropped 37 against UNC, that was the 7th game of the season. Before that game he was averaging 17.5 ppg. He also had 7 points against Georgia Southern, 2 against NC State and just 6 against Tarleton State (all 3 in a row)...basketball is very much a sport about runs. As a team we're built better to offset poor nights from Ament or Ja'Kobi than we have been in the past. We shot the 3 well, just didn't need to take many. And with our bigs we have so much more scoring now it's going to be a completely different looking season than before.

We do need to see our guards play better, none of them really stood out (not counting Ament as a guard). We saw some flashes though, I like Burg's game and wish we had him on campus all off-season.

Chaz's first big game was against Virginia in game 5...I say we give Nate time to show what he can do before we start with the pitch forks.

If his floor is a quiet 18 and 9 every night I'll take it all year.

I’ve not heard that. I’ve heard AP and others say that *they* would’ve gotten Nico more reps. Not that the staff said it. Maybe I’ve missed it.

Thing about AP and other writers…they have opinions. And they’re just that. Opinions.
