Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

You can’t omit a year. Imagine doing that for Saban. His record would be insane but he went 6-6 his first season and changes the average.

Coach Kim sure as hell wouldn’t say to omit last year. She would say that’s her team and her job to win. And she did a damn good job.
I don't think you should omit a year but I would put an * Asterisk beside of CJH first season here... Due to the mess he Walked into here...

That is insane to me.

I played in college and we had a terrible year one year. No way would I make excuses no matter what year or what was going on.

And why Kim? Lol

Come on
We’re doing an evaluation of coaching jobs, we’re not running a science experiment. And even if we were, the conditions under which data are generated matter.

I think we were severely handicapped in 2021 to the point where counting it actually skews the data. But you can evaluate however. But no calculation yields 8.5 per.

You can always torture statistics into saying what you want, but ignoring context is a little silly. The first year following a train wreck certainly isn't indicative of long term expectations, so using it to skew the stats probably isn't helpful. But your perspective of a glass at 50% of rated capacity will likely dictate whether you include it or not. It's entirely reasonable to set the moving average length however long you wish, doesn't make it right or wrong.

DW wants to maximize AD revenues. That's what he's paid to do. Winning is the path to his goal. I seriously doubt he wants/needs to win badly enough to fire a consistent 9 win coach, until and unless that starts affecting AD revenue. And given that more programs fail to exceed that level than those who do (see also: LSU, UF, FSU, etc.), the odds don't support the risk.

I wanna make $1B. It's a goal. I'd be happy with far less.
It depends if he feels a move is needed and has a coach in mind that could perform better. This is the AD that fought the NCAA to declare UCF co-National Champions when they had their undefeated season. Imo, if he has a better than avg coach but not an elite coach, DW will try to figure out what barriers he can eliminate or support he can give to push us over the top.

Fans think too emotionally. We need a steady hand as AD.

I have no doubt that he would act if he thought he could upgrade, but you better be right. UGA did it and won. Most others don't.

8.5 is wrong either way.

And I can do as I please, thank you. I happen to think piloting that 2021 roster to a 7-5 mark was borderline miraculous, so frankly, I’m not pretending that season should be a black mark on his resume. I’d 100% give Saban or Kim that same grace. Foolish not to.
I would say that CJH done a excellent job here in his first season after replacing Jeremy Pruitt. Matt Rhule replaced Art Briles at Baylor in the midst of a dumpster fire and was 1-11 in his first season ....

We gotta be tougher
We’re soft as cotton and is showing up against tough teams and late in the year

Guys are not physical enough
Nobody on this team goes for the knockout blow
No headhunters or tone setters
We get penalty for everything besides physical play

It showed up against syracuse
DLine is smaller and a 1/2 step slower and got pushed around all year

Lbs are small
DBs are slow

Strength and conditioning needs to get better

Pretty simple. They aren’t good on offense. And if we don’t have a fumble TD and two picks, we likely beat them by two plus scores. Don’t turn the ball over against them and play good defense and you will beat them. Bama is going to beat them by double digits.
They aren't good on offense, but neither is TX. That's my point. That game should have been 9-6 by all accounts.

What was obvious Saturday in person is that they were notably more physical than us. They controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball even though we moved it through the air at will in the first half when Joey wasn't getting smothered. In fairness to them, their pressure contributed to our bone-headed mistakes. We still could have and should have won, not arguing that.

Better way to look at it...

73.2% career winning percentage, so if you play 12 games in a regular season he's likely to win you...8 or 9 games.

Considering Fulmer was 74.3% and Dickey 73.8% that's a pretty good % to be at. I'd love for him to eventually reach Neyland level (82.9%) but in this day and age of NIL and transfer portal with so many other schools also pushing for top players...as well as SEC expansion I don't know that that'll ever be realistic for any coach in the conference other than Kirby...but seems he's losing his edge now.

Maybe someone can confirm. I heard Banks doesn’t actually coach safeties. STAR and Safeties are coached by Martinez. Would make sense because as a coordinator you are more focused on game plan and less on coaching a position.

You said 9-3 Coach year over year…

regular season. Full year

2022 10-2 11-2
2023 8-4 9-4. Freshman QB
2024 10-2 10-3
2025 6-3. with a QB not even on team until June

now you want to change to average and say 8.5 wins

if you look at 22-24 it is 9.33 win average, he has been 10 win coach in 22 & 24.

But you feel free to keep using your version of facts to justify your statements.
Hey why don't you just use '22? that way it will help your cause even more.

It’s 4 hours because of TV though. Not because of all the “concert” type stuff. That stuff is just there to fill in the gaps for every TV timeout. I don’t like it just like others have said. Basketball games have the same problem. You don’t need every second to be filled with entertainment. Sometimes less is more.
Especially at basketball games... I'm sure he's a nice guy, but Sterling Henton's screaming gets on my nerves

Its fair to say Banks doesnt coach anything at all or focus on gameplans. The gameplan is the same for every opponent every yr with Banks. If you have seen one Banks game you have seen them all.

Im not a consistent participant in the RF. Since the CFP is off the table, I am taking a look at our expected player loss at season's end. Had some question for those you follow recruiting closely.

Is it too soon for that discussion?

If you average every year he has been a head coach here, he is winning right at nine. That is a true statement.

My girls soccer team is all new players. We got killed the first two games and have won four straight. Should I say we are 4-0 because it was a new team? No, we are 4-2.

I don’t like excuses. You are what you are. Heupel is a good coach who wins around nine games a year and that’s just a fact right now. If he goes crazy the next two years, which we all hope for, then his average will go up.
You're comparing coaching your rec ball soccer team to an SEC football team? Okey, dokey.

It’s never too soon to discuss anything.

Speaking of, @bignewt, how are the ‘28 and ‘29 classes shaping up?

And we have 10 other signees not able to play against any P4 teams. Is that CWM fault?
This all I am going to say because unlike Glenn Beck I don't argue with idiots. Starters start for a reason and first round picks are first round picks for a reason. Next man up is coach speak and a motivational tool but is not true. There is no team in the country that would be the same if they lost several of their best players. Take the three best people off any defense and they won't be as good. Period
