The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

Right, YT never streamed SECN+, but the YT sub allowed access to SECN+ on the ESPN platform.
Ah, that makes sense. I signed up for the free trial for fubo, so hopefully that will work with the ESPN app. I’d encourage anyone else to do so, was easy and a full week. Should be easy to use another email if this stretches out beyond a week.

I just have only so much patience for all these workarounds. I resent having to do it. It’s Mercer, if I had to just watch the highlights it wouldn’t kill me

I don’t think tomorrow’s game will be on YTTV anyways, since it’s on SECN+. You’ll need ESPN+ to watch.

Normally you just have to have ESPN (not ESPN+) from your video provider to also have SEC NW+. YTTV customers probably lost access to the SEC NW+ until this **** show is resolved.

I’m not a fan of big government and intrusive regulating, but this needs to be looked at from the anti-trust angle. ESPN has had too much power for way too long..

I’m from the government and I’m here to help! Please no

Pretty sure you have to have SEC Network, not just ESPN. That is what it used to SAY anyway online.

I have the SEC Network included on Xfinity’s basic sports package. It includes ESPN, ESPN2, and the SEC Network. They give me access to SEC NW+. I don’t receive ESPNU or ESPNews on the basic sports tier.

To watch SEC Network:
    • For the live, 24/7 TV channel: You must have a live TV service that includes SEC Network as part of its package.
    • For SEC Network+: You can log into the ESPN app with your live TV provider credentials to access the digital-only content at no extra cost, even without an ESPN+ subscription.
    • For the ESPN+ exclusive events: You will need a paid subscription to ESPN+.

Think that’s a hard game to take much from, I could be way off base but I feel like Barnes and staff have a bunch of pieces and still trying to figure it all out. They also realize they have 4 weeks to start the year and 5 games to figure it all out, as a result I think we saw the biggest legit rotation we’ve ever seen from Barnes. They had gone 11 deep within about the first 8 minutes and continued rotating those same 11, they then brought in 2 more the final few minutes of what was still a game somewhat close, we’ve not really seen that before either. He let Henderson run point with Massamba and Evans out there too, again it wasn’t likely to come down to it but usually under 12-15 points and Barnes is rolling with his starters. To me it just seems like they’re really still trying to figure it all out, get as much on tape as they can and keep working…so as a result it’s hard to take much from it.

Some hot takes…thought Ament & Gillespie clearly were both more passive, probably intentionally, both still had fine games, Ament ended up with 18/9, can’t really complain about that. Estrella and Brown show nice offense in the post, Okpara and Phillips better defenders in the post, Carey is a bull when he wants to be and is a load to handle on both ends. Liked what Burg does out there, will be intrigued to see if we have him play point and move Gillespie off the ball some, thought Boswell was better than expected, Abram was a disappointment out there.

Think this team will be fine long term, but the season may be a bit more of a slow climb than we’ve been used to the last two years with the DK and Chaz teams. Front court depth remains impressive, really nice overall game from Ament. Kind of surprised by Gillespie so far. Figured as our most experienced player we’d see a bit more crisp performance from him, so to see him with 4 turnovers against Mercer was surprising. He didn’t seem to be comfortable, but maybe that is because of the 11 man rotation.

Agree with this is a team and coaching staff trying to find itself. It just seems like the offense is way too congested with a starting lineup of Okpara/Boswell/Carey.

I don't think Barnes will ever not start Okpara unless he really falls off because he's senior second year in program. Boswell played pretty well and at least knocked down a 3 point shot. Carey to me seems like better suited Tobe type player off the bench when getting bullied by another team and needing physicality.

I think the depth is so significant, the staff is taking the 2 QBs approach. They are gonna let the guys separate themselves on the court.

Also, it won’t happen. But I think this squad could pull off Caldwell’s platoon subbing.

Shot 49.2% FG & 41.2% 3PT but only 60% FT

I think we all agree the biggest problem last night was just being careless with the ball. 19 turnovers is way too many.

Somehow they had 20 fouls called on them to our 18 called on us, but we shot just 15 FTs to their 21...

Brown sees the game WAY faster than your typical freshman.

Just tons of little things. Like, once he grabbed a rebound and super quickly turned and threw a pass to get us into transition.

just watch him on the court and you’ll see it.
Yes he does, whether it’s cutting or going to the boards or solid defense and rebounding or putting it back up before the defense knows it’s gone up. Tbh, reminds me a little of how Rodman played. Very smart player on the court.
He also snapped some post feeds with no hesitation. Our guards the past few years haven’t been great feeders to the post. He and JP had something going.

The numbers are deceiving because IMO, we played TERRIBLE from an offensive execution standpoint.

Our FG% was so high IMO, because we were so much bigger and stronger than them. JP got most of his with straight up backyard dad bully ball. And Ament was just backing guys down and shooting over them.

Basically. Lots of free points we won’t be so lucky to have against better competition.

Now defense I thought was fine besides not rebounding as well as I’d have liked.

Agree coaches are trying to figure out this roster which is probably hurting some of the chemistry and play we see on the court...thank goodness Mercer shot 21% from 3 (and, yes, we played a part in that). Turnovers were atrocious and missed FT's...seems to be an early season emerging theme for this team - need to correct that asap. 2 steals for the whole game and not many tipped balls that I recall against this level of competition doesn't bode well for our ability to affect and disrupt SEC teams...this will be key to watch going forward.

Ament looked more like what we need him to be...largely played within himself and let the game come to him - shot quality was much better and his 3-pt stroke looked much better.

Really excited about what Estrella has shown so far...also Brown - he is way ahead of schedule and outplayed Carey last night - Carey looked more like the FR to me which was very disappointing.

Really need to find at least 1 more efficient 3-pt shooter to spread the floor...Burg and Abram can't play a combined ~30 min and not shoot a single 3. Henderson's stroke looked good (ignoring the last second banked heave he hit). I still think it needs to be Abram as starting SG by start of conf play if we are going to have the kind of season we want - he has the athleticism, exp and, most importantly, high %'age 3 pst shooting that's going to be needed in SEC.

So far so good for Burg to backup JG and the SG.

And now for JG...his 3-pt stroke is pure but not gonna lie - I expected more from a 4th yr player (guess I have ZZ and Chandler to blame) in terms of decision-making (passes, drives into the paint) and his D. Hopefully it's just adjusting to real game speed/intensity but he def needs to clean some things up.
