The problem is exactly this. The number is irrelevant but people like to have this mindset. We will likely win 8-9 this year but not a one of them will mean anything. If we win 9 but lose to FL, GA, Bama, OU, what did we really do?
Honestly, there are too many variables from year to year to have a standard number of wins that would define a successful season. That being said, starting next year with the 9-game schedule, 9 wins is a really good year and should put you in the playoff discussion, assuming they expand to 16 teams. Ten or more wins is a great regular season.
