Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

UT’s record is in line with my expectations going into the season, so you’d think there is no reason to be disappointed. But, how they got there is important. There was no reason to think the D would be this bad; that’s the disappointing part and it’s made worse by a surprisingly good offence.
This is fair but I will say it is rarely like we think it will be in the preseason. I will say this year seems very strange. We are just a very inconsistent team that has many flaws. We are also very mistake prone and are extremely gifted at shooting ourselves in the foot. Heupel has several things he needs to address but the reality is that there is way more parity than there has been in years. Georgia is some favorable officiating and breaks from being a 4 loss team. The margins are razor thin and we have got to be a more disciplined team than we have shown under Heupel. I think he really needs to evaluate what is leading to so many dumb mistakes that are the difference in winning and losing. I'm still glad he's our coach and think he can continue to grow. The SEC is just so competitive with 8-10 teams with similar resources to us competing for 4-5 conference playoff spots. I just refuse to live or die with the only measure of success being a championship. People are just begging to be disappointed with that type of mindset. It's a game and entertainment.

I keep running into this. What is it? HUBRIS, once again! Greed inevitably leads to ruin. I think it's why Jesus said those guys never find God.
Weird take. Having money doesn't mean you are greedy, nor does it imply hubris. Being wealthy does bring certain spiritual challenges, hence Jesus' statement.

On the flip side, lots of poor folks are getting totally bent because their team lost. Wrath and idolatry are kind of a big deal too.

The harsh reality is college football is an irrational ecosystem but that does not mean you have to apply irrational means to a situation.

Short of a hiring Nick Saban (who, btw, saw the portal/NIL world and said no thanks), there is no sure thing. If you have a young coach with a relatively high floor, you let him continue to learn and develop.

1) be exciting and good enough to keep the fanbase engaged.

2) get enough talent on the roster to make a run every couple of years.

3) with enough runs, the experience in those situations for a coach adds up and then you hit on one.

If a missed FG, a 99 yard defensive TD vs an end of half Vols TD, and a 71 yard defensive TD go the other way, Vols are 9-0 right now.
And how do we have those plays? Killer instinct and clutch teams don’t let those happen.

We’re all very fortunate to be fans of one of the best universities and athletic programs in the country.

At least we ain’t Florida, Clemson, Penn State, LSU, Auburn, and SCAR. These guys have fallen off the cliff this season and all without a HC or soon to be without.

We only get so many Vol football games a year. Let’s enjoy it.

I hope that last night was a wakeup call to Heupel, I like Heupel, I really do. But his honeymoon phase is over now. He HAS to see the staff issues and roster issues and sack up and make the necessary changes and adjustments to win, or else we are just going to be stuck in the mud

I would think everyone in the athletic department/program can see this need and I’d be shocked if it’s not all hands on deck to make it happen this off-season. Freshman experience QBs will need all the help they can get next year.

Austin Price referencing potential big portal exodus this year on the pod. Doesn’t sound like the locker room is doing too well right now
You know Boo, probably Merk and some offensive linemen (who haven’t played yet) are hitting the portal. Not sure that means there are problems in the locker room.
