There are countless examples of NfL teams who turn to the heralded rookie QB once their season is a bust.

We are now season 2 into the 12 team playoff era. There are few examples to be had considering we are less than a calendar year into this new age and you know that.

But Heupel has a very close history of this because he refused to do exactly that with Milton and Nico in 2023

There have been countless examples of programs who fire their head coach and the interim turns over the QB position the highly touted recruits to finish out the season that’s a bust.

Fun fact, there is zero difference in LSU or Florida or Tennessee’s season right now. All 3 schools are playing for the same thing in these final 3-4 weeks: NOTHING!

If Heupel is staking the future on rolling out Mac with zero experience and thinking that 2 spring practices is all that is needed to get him ready, the wolves will be out in full force in 2026 if things start off shaky

That’s on Heupel if he isn’t ready year two. He could play him for our next game for three quarters, but he won’t. He never does.

My guess is they pick up a portal Qb without question. Is he a starter or depth guy will be the question. Merk will transfer out as he has zero chance of taking QB1. Gmac will battle whoever portal guy is and Faizon will have a year to learn system, unless he just comes in and straight balls out.

If they are countless, please name a specific example where a college coach has turned to a QB with no experience when the season was a bust. They're countless, right? So name one that ISN'T from the NFL

Tennessee does to QB’s what Florida does to head coaches. Makes them rich and doesn’t keep them around long.

Absolutely! I'm not so sure Merk doesn't leave. No way in hell we can roll with a RS FR and a True FR with zero experience. Exactly why I think we get a portal QB for next season, then roll with GMac or FB, whichever one is ready.

We are exactly 1 calendar year into the 12 team playoff. You know exactly why there are hardly any examples of this.

And I’m sorry, but this new era of college football in the 12 team playoff is the NFL lite.

It’s all about the money and once you are eliminated from the playoff, all remaining games are meaningless exhibitions.

Behind the scenes everyone has talked Gmac has looked much better than Merk. I agree zero starting experience in SEC will always be a factor, but my understanding is Gmac has already showed more promise than Merk ever came close to. A portal Qb will come in I believe and battle Gmac for starter. Faizon will take a year and learn system

I suppose I could see getting a portal QB. Unless there is some crazy circumstance on GMacs side, he should get the start.

I’m sure a loss with Joey will make people feel better in 2026 than a loss with one of the two QB’s who could be our starter in 2026

You would think so. What’s crazy is if Heup could actually hit on a five star that operated his system as well as Hooker or Joey has. Accuracy and quick decision making has not been a trait of our top Qb recruits so far.

Heupel getting a QB with 2-3 seasons together is an obvious positive. He’s just an immature coach at times and unnecessarily causes issues for himself
