I'd play George MacIntyre

Still don't agree with benching a guy that has far exceeded expectations and throwing away games to get reps for next years possible starters.

Joey Aguilar is making 7 figures this year. I hardly feel sorry for the guy if Heupel decides to play for the future with the other QB’s since Aguilar is out of eligibility.

And if we roll into 2026 with zero experience for Merk or Mac, you will be among those complaining about Heupel not going portal shopping or getting those guys into games in 2025 if they turn out to be duds.

For the record, I’m not saying bench Joey for his play. I’m saying since the playoffs are out of reach, the final 3 games are merely exhibition games.

I’d like to see Heupel show Matthews and Staley and Saunders and others what the future might look like. Hell Merk could be horrid and Gmac could be fine or vice versa. But at least the staff will know what they have in the QB position going into the offseason.
I disagree with the notion that there’s no difference in going 7-5 vs 9-3.

If we don’t have good qb play next year, I don’t think not getting to play against New Mexico State is going to be the reason why.

Both result in going to meaningless bowl games.

Better to go 7-5 with the QB’s on the roster next year than to ride out 9-3 with a QB who won’t be here next year. Especially when next year is gonna be the year to determine if Heupel’s seat is warm

I’m not saying they need to play against NM State. I’m saying they need to play the final 3 games plus bowl game. That’s 4 games and about 8 weeks of practice.

I agree but zero chance that happens
Exactly - Heupel will go with who he thinks is most likely to win those games this year. Probably makes sense from his perspective because if we end up 7-5 he will be on even hotter seat than Dooley was after his Kentucky loss to close that miserable season. Especially if Vandy also happens to clinch their own playoff spot at Neyland with Pavia running his mouth - that would easily be the worst loss in program history if it happens and it's not out of question ...

I personally think Heupel would be comfortable if he rolled with Merk / Gmac these final 4 weeks and they showed flashes and we ended 7-5 vs 8-4 with Aguilar.

I think his seat will be very warm after our first loss next year if the QB play is a dud. I think Heupel can get out of this season with 8 wins with the younger guys and some promise for the future.

Doing so would mean Heupel has made a change isn’t playing the same blind loyalty he’s built his career on.

In a vacuum I would agree with you if you only look at final record - but going 7-5 or even 8-4 while watching Vandy clinch playoff spot at Neyland to close our season - I think that loss would be the end for Heupel - he would of course not get fired but would lose the fan base completely (if that has not already happened after what happened last night) - and coaches very rarely recover when it gets to that point. So I think he will maximize his chances to somehow and up 9-3 or even 8-4 with another loss in Gainsville but beating Vandy would be a little bit easily to stomach for the fan base.

Maybe initially that would be the reaction but if we lose to Vandy with Aguilar and we are rolling a complete unknown QB out in 2026, the first sign of failure will be toxic for Heupel.

If he would just rip the Bandaid off and say “we failed to meet the expectations this year. We appreciate everything Joey did in a short amount of time but we are going to start planning for the future” people would actually say hey maybe Hype has turned a corner as a coach in his growth.

There is big difference in losing to Florida and Vandy with Aguilar starting and losing to Florida and Vandy with Merk or Mac playing.

One of those scenarios is defensible. The other is not

I’ve already said this. Only thing left for the season to play for is our record. Take care of FL and Vandy, for recruiting sake. The Head man needs to sit and and take a long look at his coaching staff. He and everyone around knows changes need to be made. We have came too far from the ashes to take a lot of steps back now. Hold onto this recruiting class for God sakes too.

I think there is a better argument to make for “recruiting’s sake” that doesn’t involve Aguilar finishing the season at starter.

He will go to the portal again. This will be a norm

I still roll with Joey at least the first half and maybe give the back the 3rd or 4th quarter.
If you gonna bench your QB then may as well bench Brazzel and all the other guys.
I’m not sure the guys going to the NFL don’t call it a season. An ACL injury at this point only hurts your draft position

correct. Brazzell has no incentive to play the rest of the way out. I’d rather see the younger QB’s get some experience with Matthews, Staley, and others.

It’s a business. This new era of “college” football has sucked the joy and pride out of the game so it is what it is.

It absolutely IS playoffs or bust. The expanded CFP attracts recruits to teams that earn their way into it. Aguilar played his ass of this season and I appreciate his efforts VERY much, but at this point I'd rather give valuable reps to our future QB1 and go 7-5 than play for a spot in the Cheetos Bowl.

I don't know about playing him . Unless he's mobile we'd probably just watch him struggle behind this line. There is no telling what they had to pay Sanders Jr to come here. That scoop and score was on him last night. Joey didn't know what hit him. Having to true freshman protecting your blind side isn't ideal against a good defense. Tennessee will play two more good to decent defenses this year.

The score wasn’t due to Sanders.

He should have been tackled within 15 yards of where he scooped the ball up. Myles needed to be benched for that poor tackling effort

Sanders didn't pick up the block is why the ball came out. That's absolutely on Sanders. Yeah maybe he could of tackled the guy but it shouldn't have happened to begin with.
