Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

Counterpoint. He didn’t recruit Hooker and instead started Joe Milton over him. And then spent the most money at the time for a legitimately bad quarterback.

Again, I am not advocating he be fired this year. But I think this is the turning point game for him for most fans. And our schedule gets much harder next year. And we’re going to be starting a true sophomore or true freshman QB
I know you just want find all the negatives.

There is no counterpoint to what he’s done for the program. We now legitimately expect to win every game. Is he perfect? No. Does he need to fix things? Yes. I’m just generally a positive person, and I don’t get why some react the way they do.

There will be a day that we have a coach who really sucks again, just like when Barnes retires. I want to win more, too, but I’ve also really enjoyed the last 5 years.

Heading to bed...I really hope Barnes can make our first Final Four this year. I like the Elander hire, Coach Kim is gonna cook folks, but I don't think any coach in the history of my vol fandom do I admire and want to win it all more than Rick Barnes.

At some point DW will have to have a tough conversation with Heupel. He needs to tell him one thing. "Your staff should be leaving for head coaching jobs because they're that damn good. Don't stay stuck in your ways with only wanting your guys here."

Carter and Telander both have gotten better under him. He's getting better guys and we are seeing his first class recruits flash now that they're on the field more. Tonight was the best game by the defense all season.
Telander takes terrible angles and is one of the worst coverage LB’s you’ll see. He has at least one play a game where he gets lost because he doesn’t fill the lane and we get gashed because of it. The LB’s have been awful this year with filling gaps and getting to the edge

I do agree tonight was the best overall the defense has been

He’s stabilized the program heavily and lifted them up above average. Everyone is thankful for that.

But look around the league. We’re probably an 8 win team this year. Our schedule gets much harder next year and can just as easily only get to 8 again next year.

We’ve heavily regressed this year despite recruiting and spending at elite levels.

Heupel needs to hire legitimate coaches this offseason and someone fix the discipline and clock management issues. If he’s 8-4 two years in a row the seat will be scorching hot.

I don't see this class sticking as is..... Maybe we keep 3/4 but will the right 3/4 of players sick?
Naw… new era. It’s too close to signing day and many NIL contracts are negotiated and very good. Like I’ve said, this staff recruited hard and we have spent heavily to upgrade. I don’t see any likely leaving for a bad game. It’s time for our coach to stop being given a lot of resources and funds to make dumb decisions week after week. And keep having the same issues come up every week with discipline and time management.

I don’t think anyone realizes the investment our AD has put into football and the NIL going to our players. I don’t think Heupel is sniffing the playoffs at other SEC schools. That’s how great our AD and NIL is

I hope this is correct

I was at the game. The mood in the crowd was not one that thought UT would find a way to win this game. The 3 turnovers, missed FG by Gilbert, and several penalties lost UT a game that it otherwise won the stat sheet.

Heupel has to look in the mirror at the constant mistakes and lack of discipline that embodies this team. He’s gotten a pass over his tenure, because he has been fielding competitive teams. The fans are going to get restless and this can turn into a Mark Richt at Georgia situation quickly.

But if UT is to ever take the next step, discipline has to be addressed. Otherwise, this program will remain as a competitive fringe playoff program each season and not a championship contending program each season.
Halzle and banks need to go. Everyone else can stay.

mindblowing how bad Heup has been this yr from the jump

kirby has a guy on staff that follows his crazy ass around holding his belt loop. Heup needs one for managing the game/clock bc the **** is terrible.

Playoffs last year. Gonna have a solid but not tremendous year this year. Vols will be contenders moving forward.
I wouldn’t call this year solid just yet. Easily could lose to UF and Vandy and finish 7-5.

All hell would break loose. That would be a disappointing season.

Contenders moving forward? It’s possible but Heupel needs to make some staff upgrades after this season.

Vols made a lot of mistakes tonight. Fumble for the TD, interceptions, late hits, missed FG

The one thay really infuriates me is letting the QB scramble for 16 yards on a 3rd and 15. How does that happen? Out of position or are we just slow? Both?
Poor angles. Cant get off blocks from RB’s. And slow. We are 100% slower than we were last year
