Another Government Shutdown Thread

Voters hold the incumbent party responsible when they're unhappy with the government.

Sadly this will happen to a significant extent...especially among the ignorant poorly (and publicly) educated populace...who actually have almost no idea how government functions at all. Americans are objectively dumber and more ignorant right now than before they were 50 years ago. Test scores have steadily fallen across standardized tests measuring basic knowledge in even simple things like arithmetic and English.

The same idiots that stay on SNAP and vote Dem every time (that they actually DO vote) will surely blame the shutdown on Trump and company despite the fact that its 100% a "hostage" situation perpetuated entirely by the Dems who want to hold our inept government hostage over such wonderful "hills to die on" as free healthcare for illegals....and government (taxpayer) financed sex changes for minors (which they deceptively call gender affirming care).

Cant keep fools from being fools. We can keep the Dems from stealing Billions more from taxpayers to spend on garbage that 80% plus of Americans are firmly against.

I find it interesting that anything Trump ever said is in concrete, but the Democrats get a pass. Always
Trump is the current president, the scrutiny and any hypocrisy stemming from his past comments are valid fair game, and carry more weight than anyone else in government.

The President gets the bully pulpit, but that also comes with more scrutiny.

So Chucky Schumers' past statements get a pass. Got it.

I don’t know where you got from my statement that others just get a pass.

They naturally don’t deserve the same scrutiny as the POTUS. That is just common sense. I don’t care if it is Trump or Biden or whoever else in the Oval Office. The president will and should get more scrutiny and held to a higher standard.

Yeah in fact they do. Trump isn't the one holding things up. That is ALL on Chucky and Dolla Store. Call Trump a hypocrite all you want, but this ain't on him. As a matter of fact, the rumblings I have been hearing about going nuclear and tanking the filibuster would probably be the right thing to do both politically and for the good of the country in general. If it were anybody but Trump I would want the POTUS to do that. But since it is Trump, the left will go into orbit. But it would get things moving without the help from Chucky and Dolla.

“They’re now trying to somehow blame Republicans for cutting off SNAP when Republicans — remember the ones who voted 14 times for the SNAP benefits to flow — it’s the Democrats who voted every single time to turn that off. The same Democrats who’ve been perfectly fine with defunding SNAP and WIC for over a month now are suddenly claiming to be outraged that Republicans and President Trump can’t just wave some magic wand and fix the mess that they themselves have created,” Johnson said, reminding them that there is, in fact, a simple way to fix it: Go back to Washington, DC, and vote to reopen the government."

Don’t disagree with any of this.

At the same time, his past public comments on this points to his weakness as to why this shutdown happened and is still happening. What he said points to this absolutely being on him.

You don’t agree, and I’m not sure I do either, but he is the President and he is the one that said shutdowns are due to weak Presidents.

And I’ll add that the whataboutism for other government leaders as an answer to some nonsense the President said is just silly.

Thankyou for this. It explains how someone like Trump could be elected in the first place-- too many of the American people are too dumb to know better than to vote for him. Too many think that he is going to make their lives better, especially economically, when the opposite is true especially for the middle and lower middle classes.

And too many think that the other party will do that - which is also not true. Folks need to at some point understand that they alone can make their life better or worse. And stop depending upon someone else.

Let me guess, more handouts from the government would make the middle and lower middle class lives better?

It’s a contingency fund that was previously appropriated by Congress.

And then USDA must find other magical revenue sources to cover the large portion of SNAP that wont be covered by the contingency fund....

(This is where the ruling got into partisan hackery for sure)

Haven’t read the order. All the reporting I’ve seen makes it seem like they just have to pay what they can.

This thread cracks me up. It’s like no one gets it anymore, we’re conditioned to it now and that’s just downright sad. Everybody blaming one side or the other when it’s our own damn fault for letting us get here.

Somewhere along the way the voting populace of this country forgot a vital fact, that fact being that if you give the government the power to feed you then you also give them the power to starve you. F*** em all!

I don't think it's lost on several people here, but some.....absolutely.

Ruling in favor of a group of cities and community organizations that sued over the cuts, McConnell said that the USDA must fund SNAP using money in a contingency fund. But, he added that if the department finds that the money in the contingency fund is insufficient, then the agency must use other funding sources to make those payments.

In other words, the judge is choosing to fund SNAP over the 80-100 other items in the USDA contingency plan and then fund SNAP with magical money that does not exist.

Why have Congress, the executive branch, and bureaucracy when district judges tell them how to spend money...
