Another Government Shutdown Thread

you and your significant other own a car together. it breaks down, it needs more work done on it than you can already afford. this is your only car, without it you aren't getting food, you aren't getting to work, and it really messes up both of your lives.

you want to get work done that will let the car run again, even though its more than you can afford.
your partner wants to spent about 33% more on a whole bunch of things that won't help you get food, get to work, or generally help you live your lives.

remember that you are holding on getting the car running, and take care of the other things after the car is running. your partner wants to hold up a running car and a normal life to get some padded seats put in.

yall are in a disagreement about what should be done. which one of you is being reasonable? which one is in need of compromising?
Nice try, but do you think there is any logical argument they will agree to? Trump bad. Trump screwing black folk. Muh.

Why should Republicans negotiate?

GOP: Let's negotiate!

Dems: We want free Healthcare for non-citizens!

GOP:🤔🙁😲😀😄😁🤣😂
Its not for me to say they should or shouldn't. They're making their bed. Who am I to tell them not to sleep in it. I can tell it's not a winning strategy however.

Republicans want nothing from the Dems, hence there's nothing to negotiate. But let's have some fun.

Let's negotiate here. You play the Dems. You say to me "I want $1.5T more in spending". What are you going to offer me to entice me to grant you that spending?
I have no interest in playing dress up politician. Im happy to just call balls and strikes from the sideline.

This is nothing like the present budget issue.

The GOP is spending like drunken sailors on what it wants with the boys and trying not to pay the health insurance premiums cause the wife and kids can fend for themselves. Your analogy might be convincing if the GOP had a modicum of fiscal conservatism left.

Fair enough. When the Dems say “they won’t negotiate “ the devil is in the details. There’s nothing to negotiate unless both sides want something. There’s nothing for the Republicans to gain in negotiations

Washington Post Editorial Blames Left for Shutdown, EBT Disruption: ‘It Is Wrong… Democrats Have Held the Government Hostage’

The Washington Post editorial board on Wednesday wrote that Congress should fund the government for a full year, otherwise families could “go hungry” as key programs such as food stamps may soon expire.

The Post editorial board wrote that the Democrat shutdown has continued for so long because there has been little “discernable” impact on most Americans’ daily lives. However, food stamps, more formally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), will expire this weekend, which may deprive roughly 42 million people of needed benefits.

The Post wrote:

Host Greta Brawner asked, “We talked earlier to Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN), he was on the program, and he made the argument that Democrats, in previous situations, avoided government shutdowns by voting 13 times for so-called clean continuing resolutions that would fund the government at the previous year’s funding levels. Why not agree now?”

Bynum answered, “Well, look, I just got here. I don’t play politics. I want a clean bill that focuses on the American people, that makes sure kids have a full belly. And all of the clean this, clean that, Americans don’t understand that. They know if they have their benefits or not. So, put a bill on the table, make sure it’s very pure and clean, as they like to say, and it doesn’t have a whole lot of fluff in it. I’m not here for games. I just want to make sure kids get fed.”

Brawner then asked, “They did have a clean CR vote on September 19 in the House. Did you vote for it?”

Bynum responded, “I disagree with your characterization and want to make sure that we’re very clear about what Republicans have been doing. Any bill that they’ve put forth, they’ve always had some extra stuff to it. There’s always been a poison pill to it. So, I disagree with your characterization.”

Brawner followed up, “What were the poison pills of the clean CR — or the continuing resolution, you say it’s not clean, that was voted on in the House in mid-September?”

Bynum responded, “Here’s what is important: I think what you’re trying to do is shift the responsibility to Democrats. Speaker Johnson (R-LA) controls the House. He should come back, pull Republicans off of vacation, and make sure that we have discussions on what the country needs. We know children need to be fed. Anything else is passing the buck and is playing politics.”

thats why I said both of you couldn't afford what is needed. "t breaks down, it needs more work done on it than you can already afford"

and if we can't afford the GOP option, why should we pay 33% more for the Dem option?

Fact is, GOP has flatly refused to negotiate. If you believe the GOP will negotiate with the Dems once they give up their leverage, then bless your heart.
using government employee pay and military as "leverage". I mean that just sums it all up doesn't it. People can't pay bills but thank God the Democrats have "leverage" for whatever.
