Garner on Vol defense: Everybody must do better

Rodney Garner when he was first hired at UT. (Minus the gray and the miles)

CRG is old school yet relates to his younger players. He nailed it when he said: “It’s a challenge that we’ve got to meet head-on. That’s what being a man is, and that’s part of growing up, and you’re going to have to face challenges and you can’t run away from it.” Another of his sayings is paramount: "You've got to be comfortable being uncomfortable".

Hard to figure this D. Near the top of FBS schools in sacks and defensive TDs. Last year near the top in total defense. This year, with the same coaches, near the bottom of the FBS rankings in yards allowed and points allowed.

Lost some key personnel and have had injuries that necessitate personnel who aren’t ready. Only takes 1 or 2 to screw up everything

How is it hard to figure out? Lol this is the same coach, is it not, that coached the defense to near the bottom in all of college football in his first season. The outlier was last season, not this season. His scheme is either ineffective without elite talent or it's just plain ineffective. There are probably 50 other defensive coordinators who can coach with elite talent. That isn't some great skill. However, far fewer can coach with inferior or limited depth. We are finding out that Banks belongs to the group that can only coach with elite talent. It is what it is and we are going to have to score 35-40 points to win

I just hope we don't screw around and lose CRG because things are not being fixed. Throw his hands in the air and say I'm done here.
I don't think he is going anywhere and no doubt he is the best out there and produces.

Why this interview, is there a move coming?

Kind of indicates everybody is on the same sheet of music but lays no direct blame but enough to infer we have problems in coaching.

Standards, elite level, players, coaches and playing at a complementary level. Mentioned Self Inflecting wounds and accountability

I love Rodney, but it's obvious this defense is not good. The lack of effort and terrible tackling should not be tolerated
Thus he said EVERYBODY must do better. Simple comprehensive truth. Too many plays where we unsuccessfully chased the QB and also allowed big runs right up the gut. Not a lack of effort, but execution. In his room too.

It happens in the NFL all the time to.

2 things...

1. Why hasn't this stuff already been correct before week 9?

2. Why is Garner addressing this and not the DC making the big bucks?
Position coaches need to address THEIR players, not the DC. Bet the DC addressed the topics in staff meeting as it should be. Don’t see anybody dismissing or excusing the level of play we have seen anywhere on that side of the ball.

Demoralizing tactics by coaches or fans are not productive and should not be accepted.

He was talking about The Defense....not just his position group.

If we were talking this way in the early part of the season, I'd be a bit more excited. After 8 weeks, I just don't see any answers for this season.

Boom or bust. The problem is you can’t count on 5 sacks and a pic6 to win every game. We need some consistency.
