The Perfect Storm for Defensive Secondary Disaster

NIL$$ and NFL draft rumors.
Gibson was not a happy camper during the summer. Rumor was, he didn't think he was getting a fair piece of the pie. Rumored he was a NFL draft pick also. Makes me wonder, did he have to show up for one game to complete his honor to the Vols for a game, unless hurt? Or is he truly hurt? If he is truly hurt, all respect to him. Football can be brutal.
McCoy,, let's face it, he ain't gonna risk his chance to get his $$, and oh by the way, did I mention NFL?
Jordan Matthews,, cornerback who transferred. Didn't think he was gonna get the playing time behind Gibson and McCoy + NIL$$. Now he's balling out at Vanderbilt.
Jacobie Thomas,,, safety, who transferred to Miami. Balling out from what I hear. I guess the NIL$$ just weren't there?
Boo Carter,,, and all the drama that surfaced during the summer.
Not to mention, Christian Charles, transferred to Virginia , and Christian Harrison to Cincinnati. Both could have developed into very serviceable DBs.
We replace those players with one Colton Hood and Redmond(freshman). Redmond definitely has potential. Now Hood is hurt. Rumors have it, he's an NFL$$ draft pick. If he's truly hurt, total respect for him. He gave his all.
Sounds like if Vols want a defensive secondary,, they gonna have to chalk up more NIL$$$ to the secondary also. Or it ain't gonna change..
Don't you just love the NIL and (NFL interference) into college football?
to be clear, Jordan Matthews is certainly not "balling out"

Christian Charles is a backup safety at UVA just as he was here.

Some folks that act like players aren’t giving their all are nuts. I see nearly all players from all teams working hard and want to win. A few may lay down but it won’t benefit them in the long run. If folks don’t think the NFL don’t look into who is a hard worker or not their nuts. Players love to play and win. They aren’t like folks on the message board laying on the couch playing conspiracy theory. Most college players these days are getting a bad rap over what a few may or may not be doing. Most go to class and the majority work hard. They bluster on message sometimes get sickening. GBO

It’s a whole lot more now though than $100 handshakes and a random car. What’s happening now is a quantum leap over the old paydays.
It is now about supplying an extravagant lifestyle to teenagers. It won’t be long before every major school has multiple football, basketball, and in some cases hockey/baseball/wrestling athletes making more in one season than many fans make in a lifetime. I wonder how many parents, students, and handlers are even checking out the APR at schools that are recruiting them these days.

Saban discovered when other teams could pay players above board it wasn’t nearly as easy to win.
Yep a dirty cheater ole nick was and is. "If ya ain't cheating ya not trying." Stated on college gameday a few weeks back.

The fact that he's going to be a round 1 pick.

We're losing McCoy and Hood to the draft. Gibson will be back.
Hood is a R-So and his stock has dropped a bit since entering SEC play. Still possible he drops enough to come back next year. It would be nice to see him, Gibson, and Redmond playing together next year.

That would make me feel better about next year.

Not so sure McCoy is a "lock" to be a first day guy, much less a 1st rounder. The ACL may not be the biggest issue. The bigger issue for a GM, IMO, is the fact that he hasn't played football at all since his injury. He will need to prove, one way or another, that his knee injury isn't going to prohibit him from playing at a very high level. Nothing does that but playing football. Also... most athletes with his injury are back to playing by now. You can bet your paycheck that GM's will second guessing. The best thing he can do is get back on the field asap and PROVE he can play. Good luck to him.

That’s why stunts like the Nico Clan pulled are so damaging to the game. Fans begin to think that it IS all about the $$$

I said something similar in one of the McCoy threads. GMs and head coaches expending a first round pick are going to want to see his game speed, agility, and ability to reverse direction has not been negatively affected by the injury. Although common, not everyone comes back to what they were before and we're not talking about the difference between the third round and the fifth. First rounders with injuries are heavily scrutinized. In this year's draft cornerback Shavon Revel was projected first round and fell to third round after missing his final collegiate season due to an ACL tear.

His injury occurred at the beginning of the season but later in the year so he did not participate in the combine. That could help McCoy since he would be ready, but the bottom line is NFL will most certainly take his injury into consideration if he doesn't play another down this year.

But the vast majority aren’t pulling a Nico. But folks overreact and exaggerate. It hasn’t helped Nico either and it’s a prime example of what not to do. Some are just over the top, like thinking folks are faking injuries and waiting on the draft. Players with that mentality will not last long in the nfl. And too imply that with McCoy and Gibson like a few have on here without any evidence is pure conspiracy garbage. Just like most players take college seriously but some act like all players are not going to class which is total BS nonsense. GPA’s have actually went up among college athletes in the last few years. But nobody will acknowledge that fact. But you have some here that act like every player only cares about themselves. It’s over exaggerated BS. GBO

People have been assuming this but does an NFL GM roll the dice on a first round pick after he had to sit a year off from an injury?

I doubt it. He is probably a second round guy at this point.
Yes, they do it all the time. They also work out for teams privately. He has more than enough good tape out there. The dude is an elite level CB

Yeah, I know the vast majority are not pulling a Nico. But when such a high profile recruit like Nico makes an obvious $$ decision; it creates the perception that they are all like that.
Terribly unfair but still real

That's not true if you're getting paid to play you don't just play for the love of the game. Your old ways of thinking must change with the new era. You play for both

There are lots of kids still playing for the love of the game. The parents and others surrounding them are a different story.

I kinda agree with you on this. Revel was widely considered the top CB pick going into last season. He tore his ACL early and he fell to the 3rd round. He was not only super talented and the NFL prototype, but he was also considered to have top flight intangibles by people around the NFL.

The Titans drafted a guy who had 2 ACL surgeries in college in the first round and he wasn't nearly as productive as McCoy has been. He was at the top of everyone's board at his position coming into the season. And he is still showing as the best CB in the draft without playing a snap so far. There's no reason for him to come back to Knoxville after this season. I hope he gets healthy enough to contribute this year.

It wasn’t all just 100 dollar handshakes, just on what we know Ramsey got a house and cash. The big 12 bought corvettes and big cash to a few players. And that is just a few things plus you can just imagine things that were never caught. It was much more than 100 dollar handshakes going on. Much more
